Has anyone successfully painted a crib/Does anyone intend to?

We are using DS's and our cousins' cribs for the twins, so they do not really match at all.  I know it does not matter, but since we are closing up shop after these kiddos pop, I would like to really live up my final nursery.  I want to paint the cribs white, but also want to do so safely and without breaking the bank (I have had kids chew on cribs before, partially the reason for wanting to paint).  There are lots of tutorials online that seem pretty easy, but has anyone actually done it/have a plan to do so?  What paints/sealers did you use?  How did it withstand daily use?  Thanks!!

Re: Has anyone successfully painted a crib/Does anyone intend to?

  • I haven't painted a crib before, but my general process for painting furniture is sand really well, thin coat of primer, and then paint using super thin coats.  I would maybe ask at your Home Depot if they have a paint they know is safe for cribs.  That would be my main concern.  If you do a really good job with prep, I find painting furniture pretty easy (labor intensive, but easy).

  • This is a good question. I am getting a crib from a coworker and will be painting it. H is really good at wood work and refinishing so I am letting him do it. My only concern is the right paint.

  • Here are some crib safe paints that we are using @MrsP419

  • Use only lead-free enamel paint for the crib, its also safe for you to paint with this type of paint as long as you're in a well ventilated area, like the garage.  Also, if you don't want to spring for a sander or spend time sanding (because it can be expensive and very time consuming) you can use a liquid sander that you apply to the crib, let sit for about half an hour (or more if needed) then simply wipe it off.  You can find them in the paint section of Home Depot or Lowes.  Have someone else do the liquid sanding though because the fumes are not safe for mommy:) Ive refinished tons of antique furniture this way, never a crib, but we did both the dresser and changing table for the nursery. As for a sealer, poly-acrylic are the strongest to keep the paint from chipping once your LO starts gnawing on the railing.  Good luck and send a pic of the finished project!

  • Ditto to what the other ladies have said! I love refinishing furniture. Post pics! :)

  • Thank you for posting this! DH and I are planning to stain our current crib to a darker color, and are new to the process. The comments here have been super helpful!

  • Thank  you so much guys!  I just ordered samples from Lullaby Paints.  Do you still need to prime furniture with those?  Since the safe paint is going on top, can you use regular primer underneath?  We did all this house work last year and I still have a massive bucket of primer :-).  I am excited to get started!

  • I had the same question! Would love a white crib but everyone told me painting was not safe. The crib we had for ds was very easily scratched so there are a ton of teeth marks scratches on it already.
