Has your baby been sick?

I am curious to see if there is a correlation between sickness and being breastfed or formula fed and being in a daycare or not. If you recently weaned or are weaning, still vote breastfed. Vote no daycare if your child is watched by an adult with no other children.
Edit: Sick as in sick enough to go to the doctor. Don't include a mild cold or mild cough, etc.

Re: Has your baby been sick?

  • We've been lucky.  B hasn't been sick at all.  Breastfed and no daycare.
  • Loading the player...
  • Ds had a slight runny nose for a few days but that was it. It probably was teething related according to the doctor. He's breastfed and no daycare but he does have a germy 3 year old brother.

  • So what's the deadline on your research project?

  • I answered yes, daycare, BF.  However, she was sick with a mild cold for about a week with a cough and runny nose, never fever.  And she goes to a lady's house where there are some teenage girls and one other boy who is 2.5 years old, so not really your typical daycare.
  • Oops, didn't read the "edit" so I answered wrong.

Prior to daycare: colic, eczema, RSV and the flu

Since starting daycare: cold which turned into a bronchial infection and now possible hand foot and mouth.

I breastfed for 3 weeks until I dried up and had to go to formula. By the way, thanks for yet another reminder that my body failed my son.

I'm pretty sure if you do the research you'll see that breast milk far outweighs formula with regard to lowering risks of allergies, asthma, etc.
  • I did SS because we have had a runny nose but no real big sickness. We don't do daycare and stopped BF at 3 months.
  • Oops I answered wrong to. I guess reading is not my strong point. :(

  • He's been FF since 6 months, no daycare, hasn't been sick in any way.

  • Thank you @libberluru

Obviously I'm still a little sensitive about the subject. ;)
  • I voted no, but she did have a stomach bug for a couple of hours one night and then was over it, so I didn't count that. Breastfed, no daycare.

  • Lo hasn't been sick more than a runny nose yet (breastfed, daycare PT). With g he wasn't sick for 13 months and then I weaned and started daycare the same week. He got hit with everything in the book for about 6 weeks. I don't know which factor it was but I would never do that again! He rarely gets sick now though so I think it was just an adjustment to daycare.

  • Okay, I wasn't going to say anything, but I don't want you guys thinking I'm a weirdo!
I am a nursing student who wants to get into peds. I came on here to ask you guys questions of things we were learning about or I was just curious in general. Sometimes it's better to learn things from real life moms than just reading about it in a book, ya know?
Anyways, I didn't mean to be a creeper. If you guys don't want me asking any more questions, just let me know!
  • Find a different sample for your studies please

  • This is so... scientific

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • @libberlulu, I consider it my contribution to science. And I will do anything to click on a clicky poll so I am down with a little research.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Do you even go here?
  • I think there are so many things that go into why a kiddo gets sick more often. N hasn't really gotten sick. I think the main reason is because this winter has been so cold - she just doesn't get out of the house as much!!

  • My kid has never been sick. She is formula fed but it is really because her mom is a sparklehoar. Does that help. And if you are who you say you are then fucking introduce yourself from the jump...
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • He had the stomach flu when he was still breastfed so that's what I used to answer. He's had plenty of runny nose/slight coughs this winter too, both when he was breastfed and now that he's on formula.
  • Eh, whatever.  Every child ever will get sick. They can't nurse until they're in their teens (I mean, I guess they can, but at some point you have diminishing returns on the benefits of it), so mom's immune system can't protect them forever. Whether your kids goes to daycare, starts school when they are 3 and in preschool, or is homeschooled until they're 8, at some point they're going to be in a room full of germy kids and they're going to get sick.

I BF, but I'm not sold on the fact that ZOMG IT IS LIQUID JUICY GOLD THAT WILL CURE CANCER.  The studies don't really seem to correct for factors like whether parents smoke, access to healthcare, wealth, etc., so I don't think the evidence is as persuasive as people would like us to believe.

Also, THIS POLL IS NOT SCIENCE. I can't understand how the OP who claims to be doing this out of scientific curiosity hasn't been kicked out of nursing school becuase THIS IS TEH DUMBZ.
