Pregnant after IF

PIO lumps

So I'm finishing up week 4 of PIO (I also do two suppositories a day too) and the lumps at the injection sites are getting large. DH remarked that he can see the lump through my clothes (I was just wearing a tshirt around the house). I don't think anyone else would notice, though. Tips on anything to help?? I don't have bruising and doc said no heating pads.. I'm trying not to complain Bc seriously I will inject my eyeballs if it means I get to have a baby, but my hips are hurting..

Why no heating pads? My re said it was fine on the rear, just not on my ute. I couldn't do it without that - ouch! Other than heat, I don't know what to say. How long is your IM needle?

  • I agree with the massaging and warning it up before hand (out the bottle in your bra for a bit before you draw it or rub between your hands). Also, make sure to use the muscle afterwards- walk around or do lunges.
I did all this and still had some lumps and bruising but it was better than when I didn't do it. I would show your RE the lumps too next time you have a visit. They might have some tips...

  • TBH, I tried everything and I still got big painful internal welts. What made it feel better (but didn't cut down on the bruising/welts) was to have DH massage the area a bit afterwards and warm up the oil a bit in his hands before. The welts and numb skin took forever to go back to normal, even after we stopped PIO. So. Weird! It really will all be worth it though, just keep telling yourself this is only temporary :)

  • I tried everything and still got welts (low heating pad before and after, 15 min massage after each injection, warming oil beforehand, walking around afterwards, etc.). It helped with my comfort level, but not with the welts. TBH, they probably won't even begin to go away until you stop the injections. As long as you're not having some sort of reaction or extreme discomfort, I'd just tough it out! It will be worth it!! :)

  • My RE and my nurse told me heating up the area with a heating pad for a few minutes first would help (and she's the founder of the clinic - been doing it for 25+ years), and also to let the PIO sit in the needle for 15 mins on the counter to come up to temp first.  They said no longer than 15 mins, though.  Then, massaging the area immediately afterward.  No escaping the pain, it will hurt - but you shouldn't be getting big knots from it!  If your hips are getting too sore, ask them about an alternate injection site.  I tried other sites, but hips worked best for me.  Also found that the higher I went in that quadrant, the less pain.

  • PIO SUCKS!!  But its worth it.  I found that if I did two injections in a row on the same side then switched to the other side and did two injections in a row it helped a bit.

10 weeks of that sucked big time and it took about 4 weeks for everything to go away after stopping.  Now I do the 17p weekly injections.  It still sucks and the lumps seem to last longer because the oil is THICK!!.

One thing, if its really bad, ask the doc to switch you to PIO in Ethyl Oleate.  Its a much thinner oil, but it does have more alcohol in it and can burn quite a bit more.

  • After 9 weeks of it, my butt is full of them, too. My RE said the heating pad was fine. I also try to take a shower shortly after the injection and let the warm water hit the site for a little bit. That has helped a lot, too.
