Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 Month Change

My baby girl was a perfect baby, sleeping through the night, or getting up 1-2 a night since week 3. Once 4 months hit, she's a fussy mess getting up 4,5,6 times a night screaming bloody murder! Typically feeding her calms her down but an hour later, she's back at it. She also refused to sleep in her PnP like she has been for her entire life. She will only rest calmly in bed with me.

My first thought was, she's getting teeth, but my pediatrician doesn't think it's teeth. Has anyone else gone though this and is there anything I can/should do to help us both get some rest!

Re: 4 Month Change

  • No advice but I'm guessing it's the 4-month Wakeful and all you can do is ride out the storm.

  • I concur. I've heard of the 4 month regression. My LO turned 4 months but I haven't noticed anything yet.
  • Mine wake up every 1-2hrs so tired zzz
It has been like this for 2weeks now. She will be 19weeks on Saturday

  • I hadn't heard of the 4M wakeful so this was great to see I'm not the only one! However, I didn't think you were supposed to let them cry it out until 6 months? I'm totally fine with putting her in her crib and letting her cry, but I don't want to do any "damage" to her! We are on week 2 of LONG nights!

For those who have gone through the 4M wakeful, did you feed your child or again, just let them work it out?
  • We are on month 5.  If my LO wakes in the night, I will try and soothe him.  If he doesn't respond, I feed him.  He usually knocks back out asap.  Doing this has NOT encouraged night time feedings. He usually will wake for one feeding anyway.  It depends on how early he falls asleep in the evenings as to if we make it to 5 am for the second feeding.  With that being said, he has a milk protein allergy and reflux.  He will only drink 4.5oz at a time, so his feeding times are completely reasonable.  I say, if you can't calm them once they wake, feed them.  Try to feed them as minimal as needed to satisfy their need.
  • I know what you mean. My LO is 20 weeks and we went through the sleep regression a few weeks back. There are still some nights when he gets up every couple hours. Just be patient and roll with the punches. Oh and invest in a good coffee!! lol

My LO isn't there yet but don't let the poor baby cry. Fussing is one thing but if your LO is crying go to them. There are developmental milestones they are working on and these changes could be upsetting to them. This corresponds with WW as well (14.5 -19.5).

  • you might talk to your pediatrician about starting on rice cereal.  we did this with our little guy and he's slept through the night since.
  • It may be a coincidence but my lo was a 1-2 hour baby from birth at 2.5 months her doc sugested rice cereal in her bottles to help with reflux. The very same night she started going 3-4 hours. It has been a god send. And if we forget or run out she goes back to every 2 hours
  • Yep, 4 month wakeful.  Lasts 1-3 weeks.  Just hang in there and go to her when she wakes up.  It will pass.
  • It lasted 2 weeks here and now my LO is back to normal :)

  • All, thank you so much for your comments and feedback! We are on week 3.5 and still getting up every 1-2 hours, but it helps me to know what my babe is going through! Crossing my fingers that we are reaching the end!

    Much appreciated!!

I never heard of the 4M wakeful period- but man am I living it!!! Baby has been waking up every 2-3 hours- I have been trying to put her in bed with me to calm her! At 0230 this morning she was up and before I could register an emotion through my fog of zombie fatigue- she had the biggest smile and then started laughing!- all I could was laugh too! We can sleep when we are dead I guess!

  • we are going through this, too---week 2 of it. no advice but appreciate hearing i'm not alone and hopeful it will end soon!!
  • My LO had a wakeful period at four months. We are currently in our second sleep regression as we approach six months. Hang in there, this too shall pass.

  • I could have written this myself!! It's been almost 3 months here and it looks like no end in sight!! I've tried everything and she's sleeping about 2-3 hours and up. Sometimes I can soothe her and she goes back out, but others she had to be fed. Good luck!! This is sooooo exhausting!!
  • My LO is 4 months today and he (with the exception of the last 2 nights knock on wood) has regressed in his sleeping habits for about a month... Waking every hour or two to nurse.  He goes back to sleep immediately after eating with no issue but he is right back up again an hour or so later.  Ride out the storm, hopefully it shall pass.  I certainly hope so lol cuz the last 2 nights I have managed 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep (even though I woke up to check on him after 3 hours lol)
