i think you need to wait it out and see how bad it is before you panic. you might find that you are able to get everything done within the normal hours, or that you can take work home and its not so bad. i think jumping the gun will only make u look bad.
I agree, you need to wait and see. I am in a field that people consider "grueling" and long hours and blah blah blah but honestly for me personally it is not that bad. When I am busy I am all business at work and do not mess around, and it is rare that I need to log on at night or on the weekend. It happens, but not enough to be an issue at all. I would not approach your supervisor about it but it might make sense to casually ask some coworkers, "Hey, so how did it go last year during busy season? Was it really that bad?" etc.
Wait it out. Often times, things aren't as bad as described up front.
And the people staying past 5 now that the boss is back? That's up to you. I'm not a suck up and I leave at 4;15 - WELL before my boss does. But I'm also in the office an hour before him too. *I* know I'm putting in the hours and getting my job done, and as long as I'm confident that my boss knows this too- I really don't worry about the "staying until after the boss does" thing.
Especially as I have a young child too! If I don't leave, he doesn't get picked up from daycare!
If for some reason it comes about that actually the BOSS expects you to stay after 5, then maybe it's time to talk to him about expectations. And explain that as described to you, you'd be able to leave at 5. If this is changing, you need more information about it (and then clearly decide if this really is the right fit for you or not!).
Re: Advice on new job/expectations
I totally think you should listen toyour H and wait it out.
Your boss might just be giving you a "worst case scenario" type of explanation.
