Ruth - is it too old?

DH stated today that he thought we were for sure going with Ruth if this LO is a girl.  I hadn't realized he *we decided already!  lol  Anyway, I like Ruth nn Ruthie, but would like to hear others gut reactions.  It will make the name short (last name is one syllable too), but it goes with our sibset of Joseph (Joe), Samuel (Sam), and Elise.  Thoughts?

Re: Ruth - is it too old?

  • It's lovely with your sibset!

And yes, it's old fashioned, but vintage names are very stylish right now.

  • I personally like it a lot, but it's my mom's name and she has always hated it.  I'm not sure why though!

  • I love Ruth. Would have used it for a middle name if this LO were a girl.

  • I love it, and always wanted to use it, but my last name is Booth!

  • im not a fan, but im not a fan of the recent old lady name trend
  • I'm actually shocked its not more popular with the grandma name trend. ruth is actually really cute. and has the oo sound thats in a lot of other popular names
  • It's still too old lady for me. I know those names are coming back but Ruth is probably my least favorite of the old names.

  • DD's MN is Ruth after DH's grandmother, and we were considering using it as a FN.  I like it a lot.  The one syllable LN thing would give me pause too (our is also one syllable), but it is a fine name and goes really well with your other awesomely named children.

  • It's too old lady IMO.  My last living grandparent is Ruth, so I can't get past that.  Old fashioned names are becoming trendy, and names do make come backs, so it might not be weird to use now.  What about using it as a middle name?

  • I love it!
  • It was my great grandma's name, Margaret Ruth, but she went by Ruth. In some ways I like it, but I don't see myself using it. I do think Ruthie is cute.

One of my college roommates had a niece named Ruth and they called her Ruthie. Adorable.

Yeah same for me. I like the fact that "old fashioned" names are coming back but Ruth is up there with Mildred, something that reminds me of a old persons name.

  • My DD's middle name is Ruth after DH's grandma. I had two friends named Ruth so I don't think of it as old lady. I think it's so cute and Ruthie is adorable.

Thanks Molly, I see your DD is Lucy, that's on our list too!!  But, baby will have an aunt Lacey, which seems too similar..

I can see that. BNB is pretty big on the Old Lady Names so we might be a touch skewed but I think it's a great name. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, not annoyingly popular = win!

  • It's really not a bad name, but I am not really a fan.  It was my piano teacher's name growing up so it still seems just old lady and not old fashioned trendy to me!  If you like it though, it's not a terrible name.  Once you actually name your daughter that people will probably love it even if they weren't a fan of it before!

I dont really think that it's that old. I have an aunt named Ruth and never thought that it was old-fashioned.

I also think that it goes really well with your other children's names.

  • It was my grandmothers name so if the next baby we have is a girl it will be her mn. I'm not a huge fan of it normally though. I do love the nn Rue though.

  • Funny, this was a potential name on a Friends episode that reran last night! I think it's a cute name and like the vintage feel...pretty, classic and normal!

FYI you probably will hear 'baby Ruth' comments :) But I wouldn't let that stop me...
  • Ruthie is so adorable. Please use it.
