Re: Gestational Diabetes Check in

  • Yeah they def do. I wonder if it was bc it had been almost 4 hrs since my snack by the time I ate dinner. Do u think that would cause it to go up?

  • Ok that's a bit of a relief. I just hate not knowing what I did to make it go up. Got stuck in bedtime routine with my son and lost track of time. It's so hard eating on such a schedule. Thank god we have this going. I don't know what I would do otherwise. Thank u ladies for listening!!

  • Bedtime messed me all up, too! It's just hard to know how long it's going to take.

Both of my kids are cuddlers, which is great, but trying to time the two hours between dinner and testing can be hairy. If it's just me because DH is working late, it's even more challenging.

On another note, I'm finding that Ben and Jerry's banana peanut butter Greek frozen yogurt is a good night time snack. My fasting was 83 this morning, so there's that. I like ice cream, but I don't need that many calories at night!

  • @fourthnlast any news from your endocrinologist? Sorry you're feeling down!

My fasting number was .1 higher than what is recommended (5.4 vs 5.3 - I think we look at different numbers in canada?) anyways, my doctor had told me to increase insulin if it was higher in the morning but it's just this one time and I think it may be because I slept in later than usual.. I had the exact same snack as the night before and that morning it was at 4.9.. It's just so confusing! I have a doctor appt Tuesday so will ask then too but just wanted to know if anyone else had any experience with this..

  • So ladies what are you making for the Super Bowl now that we are more limited with our choices? We are doing chicken wings (no breading), pulled pork (light on the BBQ sauce), and a veggie platter with a blue cheese dip that I made using blue cheese crumbles (duh) 0% plain Greek yogurt garlic powder and a dollap of mayo. As much as I wish I could have chips and guacamole or pizza I think I'll be satisfied with my options.

  • I'm not making anything, we're New Englanders, so we won't be watching the Super Bowl. But now that I'm thinking about party food, I'd love to make my spinach artichoke dip, but I'd need to find a suitable replacement for tortilla chips.

  • Well so much for my little theory. Just tested over again after lunch. I'm so upset right now bc this probably means they will want me to go on insulin. How do my #s go from being perfect to way out of wack so quick with the same amount of carbs. I don't know what the heck I'm gonna eat for the Super Bowl bc were going to a friends who is of course making a baked potato bar. I figured I could do half a potato with fixings but after these numbers today probably not. So frustrating.

Don't beat yourself up too much, if you have only been testin for a week or so your doctor isn't going to expect things to be perfect. I was told to take the first few weeks to experiment and see what really makes your numbers spike and what keeps them normal. Also remember sometimes our hormones just go crazy and while sometimes things work other times they won't.

I was thinking it would have to be vegetables, celery would probably be good, but far cry from tortilla chips.

  • I'm so sorry, laroo. It's very frustrating. Hormones are a bitch! I definitely find I have high number days if I don't get enough sleep.

If it puts it in perspective my midwife recommends meds if 50% of your numbers are over. My sisters doctor, who is on the very conservative side, recommends meds if 20% of your numbers are over. So they don't expect perfection :)

Ooh portabella mushrooms. Yum. That sounds good.

My nutritionist or diabetes person (not sure their title) said that if 2 or 3 of my numbers are out of range this first week we would be talking about insulin. That's the only reason I'm freaking out. Is that just ridiculous conservative? Maybe I can fight for another week at least then.
    <a href="http://www.thebump.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Getting Pregnant"><img src="http://global.thebump.com/tickers/tt18254a.aspx" alt=" BabyFruit Ticker" border="0"  /></a>

  • Try some rrl tea and raw almonds if you're into that. A couple of ounces of almonds with a meal apparently can really impact the glycemic reaction a lot. I also can't overstate how much exercise is helping me, both in terms of my numbers and just my mental well being about the whole thing.

Personally I think 2-3 numbers out of range the first week is very conservative. You're still figuring things out, for crying out loud, but I am not a hcp. Maybe if you can talk about it and say I feel like these were out of range for this reason and I can avoid it by taking these steps in the future that will hep you avoid insulin.

Yeah those are great tips. Thank you. I'm just totally confused bc I just ate half a baked potato with lots of toppings and did not walk for 20 min after bc were at a friends house (i walk for 20 min after dinner every night) and my number was lower than its been in days. Just seems like no rhyme or reason sometimes.

Definitely advocate for yourself. Also my diabetes counselor said that for some people fruit throws their numbers way off for others it's milk and for some starches, every one responds differently.
    image
  • My "throw off" so far (just tracking the first few days) seems to be fruit.  I can tolerate milk and cheese well, but when I had a strawberry cheesecake yogurt my readings were high. =/ Makes me sad 'cause I love me some apples lately, but... might have to stick to oranges and less sweet fruits.

  • Apples are very low glycemic (lower than an orange) and their skins have polyphenols which can help control sugar. So if you haven't actually tried them yet it's worth a shot!

  • @fourthnlast I completely understand! This weekend was by far the worst :( This morning I woke up to the highest fasting number since I've started tracking.. It definitely sent me in to panic mode. I will increase my insulin tonight and see how it looks tomorrow morning.. I also have an appointment tomorrow so we'll see how that goes.. Hope your appointment goes well!

Also, for those struggling with fruit, as @Rrrrrrachel mentioned, apples work for me too. But I had half a banana Saturday morning at breakfast and my numbers after were quite high.. It's trial and error I guess! We have to see what works for us specifically..

I only do a banana in a smoothie with plain Greek yogurt so the protein balances it out
    image
  • I'm scared to try a banana!
it's so hit or miss with me! I had half a banana with english muffin and peanut butter and my numbers were so high. Half a banana with oatmeal and my numbers are fine! That's the worst part..you think something works and when you have it again it doesn't..

If you do want to try a banana, i'd start with half and like @Newter135 pointed it out - pair it with protein..

  • Hey ladies, hope you are all doing well. Question about weight; has anyone else lost weight since starting your testing/ GD diet? I'm down four pounds since my diagnosis, and I'm not too nervous ( I'm a bigger girl to start, and docs have said he will take what he needs) but on the other hand, isn't this going to make it difficult to estimate his weight? I've had pre e/ BP issues and one of the signs to watch for is rapid weight gain from water retention. How am I going to know, when I've lost close to three pounds since my last appointment? I know you're all not doctors, but I guess we will be stuck with sonagram estimates for size.

  • I lost a little weight and then kind of leveled out. I don't think how much you gain is. A good predictor of what the baby weighs, at all. You may have to track your own weight between spots, I guess, for the pre-e thing? I would think there would be some bloating or swelling associated with that kind of water retention, too?
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @rrrrrachel I will definitely be keeping an eye out for swelling. I just find it odd to be losing weight during pregnancy in general I guess, it's never happened to me before. So long as we come out the other side healthy, that's all that matters anyway. Wish I could lose weight so easily not pregnant!

  • Stay on the gd diet and you might!

  • I'm still waiting for my appt. next week to go over diet and testing, but in the meantime, I've been working on cutting back on carbs and sugar - which means all I want now are carbs and sugar.

Have any of you heard about making a pizza with riced cauliflower for the crust?  I tried it, and it was kind of awesome.  Just thought I would share my modified recipe for anyone craving pizza.

Buy a bag of frozen cauliflower florets and microwave to cook with a lid over the container (the original recipe said 8 min., but I had to cook it longer).  The rice the cauliflower.  I used a potato ricer, but you could also do it in a food processor.

Combine 1 cup riced cauliflower (you should have extra to save), 1 cup shredded mozzarella, and one egg.  Preheat oven to 450, and then smush/flatten the ingredients on a baking sheet coated with Pam to form a crust.  The original recipe said to sprinkle oregano, fennel and parsley, but I used oregano and garlic powder instead.  Bake for about 15 minutes.

When the crust is done, top with a lower-carb pizza sauce, a little cheese of your choice (cheddar worked, mozzarella ended up being too much b/c it was also in the crust), and any other pizza toppings you want.  Then stick it under the broiler until the cheese is melted and enjoy.

Play around with it for a bit... My crust is always crispy at the edges, but the middle is always softer and I need to use a fork for a few bites.  However, it really does get all the pizza flavors in there, and I didn't miss the dough.

  • It's only been a week and I'm so sick of meat and cheese. I really just want some mushroom risotto or pasta. Blargh. 9.5 weeks to go...
    image
  • I made some brown rice risotto early on and it was actually pretty good on my blood sugar!  I did winter squash in it, too.  I did take a walk after I ate it.

  • @Newter135 I've had basmati rice, mashed potatoes and even pizza for dinner and I was always within a good blood sugar range (granted, it was at the higher end of good with the pizza).. I think portion control is important to consider since we are allowed a certain amount of carbs..it is just a question of finding out what works for you and what doesn't.

sweetmelissa0707 I have also lost a little bit of weight. I was eating pretty much whatever I wanted before and started being really careful once I was diagnosed with GD. However, my doctor is not concerned so I am not either. I am having an ultrasound next week to see how baby is growing and estimate her growth.
     BabyFruit Ticker
  • From the time I got my diagnosis my weight has stayed the exact same (almost 3 weeks ago).  My doctor wasn't concerned, so I'm not.

I am SO frustrated with my fasting numbers.  Nothing I've tried is helping me get them down.  My OB wants 90 and under and I was 100 yesterday and 104 today.  During the day everything is great, but those DAMN FASTING NUMBERS!

  • My mw recommended almonds before bed. I eat a handful (about ¼ cup) of raw almonds and some dark chocolate as close to bedtime as I can. They have come down since I started doing that, no idea if it's because of the snack or not, though. I also only have to be under 95, but several days ivebeen under 90. I also started eating dinner earlier, before six.

It's been a total roller coaster. Basically, no one knows why my #'s are going so high. Yesterday was the worst - after breakfast and 20 units of insulin I was at 247. I'm typically 80-90 after eating. They have increased my night time Lantus to 100 units starting tonight and my meal time insulin is now 1 unit of insulin for every 2 grams of carbs.
