Help! Baby carriers!

Trying to figure out which carrier is the best! Could use some advice! Looking at the Boba carrier, a wrap or Moby carrier, and a ring sling. Do you ladies have any suggestions/preferences? Thanks!

Re: Help! Baby carriers!

  • There is no best - just personal preference. The best bet is to find a store that will let you play with different kinds. I had a Moby, which I only used the first little bit, then an Ergo and Beco, which I liked. I might try a wrap and a ring sling this time.

  • I loved the Moby when C was an infant, but she only liked one of the ways it wrapped.  If you get one of those, definitely experiment with different ways of wrapping it if your LO doesn't seem to like the first one you try.

Once she got older, I got a Lillebaby (very similar to an Ergo), and we both loved it.

I hated the ring sling, I couldn't figure it out well enough and always felt like she was going to fall out.  Not sure on the Boba.

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • I had a moby, but I found it to be way too hot. I couldn't wear it for long periods of time. I have woven wraps and ring slings. There's a bit of a learning curve but once you get it they're my favorite. I never tried a beco but I heard they work best with small babies. I have an ergo and a tula also. The tula is a little more comfortable I think.

FTM here, so no real suggestions, sorry!

    Three things:

    1. That video RULED.

    2. "Twins should always be dressed identically... forever."

    3. Cute baby gurgling sounds!

  • I got a k'tan for when LO is small. It's like a moby wrap for dummies. Getting an ergo for when he's bigger.

  • @CAMag, I counter your video with this one: the hot dad moby as it is more commonly known:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYdI7HH9PW0

Your movie made me laugh and made DH squirm uncomfortably at the poor baby necks flopping around!

Aaaahh! More cute baby sounds! I think the first guy was cuter, but this was more helpful. H approved!

@bebemac -- what about the beginning of the video when the babies were practically choking on each other's toes!?!

I felt like his video was a 'what not to do'!

Indeed! I liked the funny spin and the music, though!

We used a lot of backpack style carriers (front and back) and they were all pretty awful... Hurt both of our backs. We used a circle sling when DD was really small, but she didn't really like it.

We used a Sakura Bloom ring sling when DD was 6mos+, it was good, much better than the backpack types, so ring slings are okay.

I'm planning to use a Baby K'tan this time :) I know a few people who have them and LOVE them. Moby's are intimidating to me and the k'tan has a lot of the benefits of a wrap but its already halfway wrapped, so this seems like a nice middle.

Loved the Moby and my other stretchy wrap. When she was older my baby hawk was my favorite DH likes the ergo.

  • Is it unreasonable to think I can use an Ergo (with the insert) early on?

No, I did that when my daughter was first born.
  • @ohyealovely Ok, thanks! I just wasn't sure if the Ergo would be too big.

  • @bebemac the insert makes them fit in there nicely! I think for the insert they need to be at least 7 pounds. It worked well for us for about 1.5 months (my daughter was a chunk and outgrew it quickly!)

I love my Moby the best, but for a Spring/Summer baby I like my K tan breeze. I also have an Ergo and like it ok. I just prefer the tighter hold of the wrap but not all people do. My mom said she was claustrophobic in it.  I ordered a ring sling from a friend who makes them and am excited to try it out.

  • I pretty much wore the moby everywhere the first 6 months. Getting hot didn't bother me too much but I hate how bulky it is when you don't have it on. The ergo didn't work for us until DD was over 1, her face would always hit right where the front part and straps met (this may have been an issue with the performance/sport on we bought, I compared it to my friends and it didn't seem to have the problem). I'd like to try the Beco and/or find one H will use when LO is little. He was never up for trying the moby.

I second chickpea's recommendation. We have a crunchy store around here that has them to try on and even rents them to try out for a while.

  • We're going to start with a baby ktan and see how it goes. In looking at the videos, it looks much easier than the moby and I've heard is easier to put on and off yourself than an ergo.
  • I love all types of carriers. I would invest in more than one if your budget allows.

I loved the Moby when dd was a tiny baby. I think it will be too hot for a June baby though, so I plan on getting a Sakura Bloom pure linen ring sling.

When dd was around 5 months I started using our ergo. Love it! She is a tall baby, so I switched to a toddler Tula at around 15 months. Still have the ergo for this baby.

I also love woven wraps. There is definitely more of a learning curve, but they are fun to play around with. So many different carries.

I would recommend looking into local baby wearing groups. They usually meet up once or twice a month and you can try out different carriers.
  • I've been doing sone research about this and think I'm going to go for a Tula carrier instead of an Ergo. Looks more comfortable for baby and me.

  • Just a FYI...we found the Ergos at Target marked down 70% last weekend. They had a few available. Might be worth seeing if one near you has any if that's the route you want to go.

  • @CAMag that video was HILARIOUS!! Poor babies!! My girlfriend gave me her Moby that she only used a handful of times. I was practicing in front of hubs. He was laughing his ass off at me! It seriously isn't too difficult (although I wasn't trying to put twins in). As for the hot dad, did he peel a comforter off that baby in the crib? Also, I loved the required kiss on the head and tucking of the arm for the Moby to work lol.

We plan to use the Moby in the beginning (if it isn't too hot-- savannah in June can be killer) and then switching to the Ergo. Hubs doesn't want to carry the baby and has refused the Moby. He's open to an A-frame ruck sack style carrier when she gets older though lol!!

  • This is my naivety showing but I thought I heard that slings were dangerous-- could cause suffocation from chin to chest blockage of airways?

    Omg hahaha

  • Twins should always be dressed identically...forever.

    I'm dying

  • I have a bunch of carriers I picked up at yard sales and/or received as hand me downs from my crunchy friends. I am registering for the Ktan Breeze though because that looks easy!

Did anyone find the ergo carriers too hot to spend in outside for LO? It's #1 on my list but I haven't gotten a chance to really look at one. We live in the south and since it will be summer that is my big concern so I want something that is more or less breathable

I found mine to be a little warm if I were outside. The infant insert made it warmer. I mostly used it indoors, like for grocery shopping and stuff. I thought the moby was way warmer though. I used it for maybe a week or two. I'm pretty sure there's a sport ergo that's supposed to breathe a lot better and keep both the wearer and baby cooler.

  • I have lots of babywearing info in my siggy link (I'm a babywearing educator) - www.becomingmamas.com/babywearing if you are mobile.  The best thing to do is to see if you have a babywearing group nearby so you can try on different carrier types before you buy.

Any carrier should support baby knee to knee with the knees slightly above the bum and should not hurt the wearer.  Babies should be kept in the upright tummy to tummy position and high and tight on the wearer (unless actively nursing).

Oops! I probably just showed my age. That was a popular song when I was in high school! Around 1989-1990!

Do you tap dance? It looks so hard!

It definitely wouldn't be my first choice for an infant in the summer, especially with the insert.

It would be a great carrier when it is a bit cooler and lo is a bit bigger, so if you are willing to invest in more than one carrier, ergo is a solid choice.

  • With my daughter we found that the Moby worked best for us for the first few months then we moved on to the Ergo. Unfortunately the Ergo does get a bit warm when you're outside during the summer months but it was amazing for grocery trips and for outside when the weather started to cool down.

  • More than one person and store clerks said you will likely end up with different ones, and I bet it's true. I don't have room to store a bunch of these things but I know I'll end up with probably two different kinds. Agreed with the advice to go try them out.

  • lizardbreath14 - both are good options!  I love the Bali Breeze because they have such pretty colors but they are pretty similar as far as feel.  Gauze is lovely for a summer newborn but a thin cotton is nice too.  Glad the blog is helpful :)
  • Anyone have any experience with baby carriers and large breasts? I've been worried that I won't be able to carry the baby without smothering him, and I'm worried about the carriers fitting me in general, though I really would like the option!
