Sleep trainers come in!

DH and I are going to stay overnight with some friends that live a couple of hours away. We sleep trained a couple of weeks ago and her sleep has been amazing (naps included). I know it's just one night, but if you've gone out of town did it mess anything up? Were they able to put themselves to sleep even in a new place or did you need to help soothe them? Did you have to re-train when you got back? I doubt that one night will throw things off, but just curious what others have experienced out of town.

Re: Sleep trainers come in!

  • You probably don't want to hear my opinion but I would say, "Don't do iiiiiittttt!!!" Lol. Only semi kidding. ;) Ben is not completely sleep trained but if he was ever on any sort of good pattern and we stayed overnight somewhere (this happened a few times) it totally screwed him up for at least a week until I could work him back into the "good pattern". This also includes me going out of town for an overnight visit. Although he was home in his normal environment, I wasn't there and it seemed to throw him off. All this said, Ben is just not a great sleeper anyway so maybe others will have more positive experiences to share... Good luck lady!

  • @TheTamedShrew LOL!! Sorry!!!

Maybe the couple of weeks of good trained sleep will be enough to get you guys through!
  • When we traveled it wasn't as smooth of a night but she eventually did fine. She would typically go down east, wake up 20-30 min later not knowing where she is and cry. If she was just whining I'd give it a few minutes but if she sounded distressed at all I'd go to her quickly. I'd rub her back and talk to her and do what I could to soothe without picking her up so that she'd get used to the new place and knew I was nearby but didn't rely on me for comfort to put herself to sleep. We went to several new places and the first night was always a little rough, sometimes easier than others though. However, it really only took a few times soothing before she'd fall asleep for good and then didn't wake up til morning. It didn't mess with her ability to sleep at home at all - once we got home she went right back to normal. And we were gone 2.5 weeks and stayed in 4 diff places!

    Good luck!

  • I literally had to tell everyone (including out of town in-laws) sorrynotsorry but we are NOT sleeping overnight anywhere until he is on a consistent sleeping pattern that does not include several wake ups. We've stuck to it and he is waking only once per night and hoping we can at least keep this up for a long time. I can handle this, but not several wake ups.
  • Thanks, @numbersgirl08, that makes me feel better. I presume I'll probably have to help her out tonight. She's taking a good long morning nap in her crib right now, and we're hitting the road as soon as she wakes up. Hopefully that will help her stay on track tonight.

  • Yup! Just try to stick to your norm as much as possible and do your best. If she's been doing well at home for awhile I don't think one night will mess things up!

We started out great, but due to DH's horrible planning it all went to shit. I did everything to make sure she got her three naps in today (including holing myself up in a room with her for an hour and a half while DH was laughing and spending time with our hosts). Then they thought it was a good idea to leave to go eat at a crowded restaurant at 7:00 that had a fucking 45 min wait and DH said nothing. I would've spoken up, but I was trying to not be that uptight mom and go with the flow (also these are his longtime friends so I expected him to speak on our behalf in this situation). She fussed pretty much the entire wait and I had to keep holding her and entertaining her the whole time we were trying to eat to keep her from having a meltdown (which she promptly did on the drive back). Even though we put her down an hour late she still drifted off quickly. Which would've been great except the friends we stayed with put us in the tiniest room imaginable WITH her (I had asked DH multiple times to figure out the sleeping arrangements in advance) that was adjacent to the living room where they were all laughing and talking and people slamming doors. She woke up as soon as we tried to crawl into bed. Now I am still trying to get her back to sleep and haven't slept a wink myself. So fucking fun. I can't wait to take another overnight trip planned by my husband. And he's snoring his ass off next to me right now. Never again.

  • Awww I'm sorry. It's so hard when you can't plan things. And people just don't get it. Hopefully you can catch up on sleep today and I bet she will be back to normal tonight.

  • Thanks, ladies :) DH redeemed himself by fetching me a venti from the nearest SB. Still never letting him plan another trip.

  • I hope this doesn't scare you away from going anywhere again. But you will definitely have to plan so that you can ensure LO can nap, go to bed close to normal time, and sleep in a separate quiet room!

Wow! That sucks girl!!!! People just don't understand all the extra accommodations and special attention that goes into traveling with a baby. and when they aren't conscious of a sleeping baby knowing how hard it was to get them that way, it makes me stabby. Lessons learned but still sucks while you are in it. And who doesn't have coffee?!! Especially when hosting guests?!!
  • @funkyphoenix, IKR?? The funny thing is the wife is pregnant and they have a 2.5 year old. They should know these things!!
