Dumb Questions

Re: Dumb Questions

  • I have a dumb question...
I'm wondering how a trip to the grocery store with a newborn works? Do you put the car seat in the cart? You aren't supposed to put in in the top part right? So if the baby is in the car, he/she takes up most of the room.... Am I the only FTM wondering how this works? I know you could baby wear too, but I'm thinking in this cold weather, I wouldn't want to wake LO out of the car seat to try to wear.

  • I have a dumb question/symptom I want to ask about.
I have been having a weird feeling in my leg that comes on very suddenly - inner/upper thigh area that feels like I suddenly have no bloodflow. It's like LO moves and I suddenly get a painful dead leg. I hadn't ever heard of this pregnancy perk before and I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

  • This is for all you ladies who have outside babies and had a vaginal birth. Sorry if TMI!! If you don't want to know state of vag stop reading :) I'm 10 days post delivery. It was a long one and I was induced. I had moderate tearing. I didn't have the "extreme bleeding" I was warned about but lots of pain and pressure. I'm still taking the strong ibuprofen (600mg) I was given after birth 2x a day and can definitely tell when it wears off. My stitches have mostly dissolved but the pressure and pain is still there. Do you think recovery is normal to take this long?

Car seat goes in the basket, not on top.  I never had a problem finding room for groceries.  But, it is much easier to wear baby around and worth the minor inconvenience of getting them out of the seat. After a couple of trips, you'll be a pro!

I tried to schedule all my grocery trips for when DH was there, so one of us would push LO in the stroller (the car seat would clip on it), while the other one pushed the cart.

This is what we did for stocking up trips. Worked perfectly since DH and I normally do that kind of shopping trip together anyway. If it was a smaller trip I wore DS or put him in the cart. I get your concern about not wanting to take lo out to wear because of the weather. I always managed to make it work when he was in the cart. I definitely utilized the bottom of the cart plenty of times.

@Nikkijo1020  I'd contact your doc to double check with him/her since we all heal differently.  FWIW, I definitely didn't have that kind of pain two weeks post delivery but I had a minor amount of tearing.

  • Re: Grocery Shopping - I always baby wore when LO was little, the few seconds of moving him from the car seat into the wrap didn't matter and he settled right back to sleep. By 5-6m he could sit up and I'd put him in the seat on the cart.

Re: Wiping - the first 6-8wks he pooped almost every diaper change (or it felt that way lol) so we always wiped. By around 6m we stopped wiping pee diapers if he wasn't super wet, but I feel like for a boy there's less "nooks and crannies" to get irritated so it wasn't as important? Maybe that's weird.  But yea, some people get really freaked out if you admit that you don't wipe lol.  LO never had issues with rashes/etc so I think it was fine.

At some point we stopped wiping DS for just wet diapers. His skin has never seemed irritated from it. I've intentionally felt his skin in the diaper area to see if it was moist and it always feels completely dry. I'm not sure what we'll do with this lo since she's a girl. We're already freaked out about all of the extra places for poo to hide so I imagine we'll be using a lot more wipes. Especially thinking back to those super runny breastmilky poos, ugh. Boy diapers are so much easier after they get over peeing right when their diaper comes off.

  • DS usually plays in the family room and runs back and forth between there and my bathroom while I shower. I'm planning to continue letting him do that and to put the baby in her bouncer right outside of the shower like I used to with DS. If DS ends up being too rowdy around her then I'll roll her bassinet in and put her in that.

I'd bring it up at your next appt, but my guess is that LO is chillin on a nerve. I had something similar a couple months ago and that's what they told me!
Just asked my OB - you're exactly right. LO likes to hit my nerves and make my left leg go out. Little troublemaker. Thanks!!

Here's a question so dumb I'm embarrassed to ask it! But I'm still fucking pregnant, so I will deal with the embarrassment.

Someone was telling me that sitting on/bouncing on a birth ball could help LO get down into position (he hasn't dropped yet).

Is there any truth to this or is it bullshit?

Me doctor told me to do this last week (37 1/2 wk appt) after discussing the huge size of my baby and the possibility that it might not fit. I got one that night and sat on it an hour or so a day. I had my first cervical check yesterday (a week later) and the baby had "dropped" and was in a "good position". I'm continuing to sit on it until LO comes out! Who knows if I would have dropped on my own, but it can't hurt to try!

The nurse that taught my birthing class recommended this. I have been sitting/bouncing on a ball and FWIW I was told my LO has dropped way down at my appt on Monday.

Maybe I should get one. On Monday LO was so high up that dr was looking in the wrong place for the heartbeat.

It's worth a try! It's pretty comfy to sit on, and it's really nice to use as a footrest, too!

Well, if it doubles as a footrest, I'm in. Also, I want to see the circus that will be my cats trying to balance on it. And if it gets things going to get LO out, that's cool too.

  • My prenatals have been having an effect on me for about the last two weeks. I've had to eat a larger breakfast than normal or cram food down my throat the second I start to fill ill otherwise I'd throw up.

Follow up to my previous dumb question: how long should I sit on the ball per day? I made it about 25 minutes before my back was killing me and had to stop. How long is long enough to be effective?
I don't know but that's a total bummer! I sit on it for my back - it feels so good and relieves so much pressure for me. I sit on it a few times throughout the day - maybe about 2 hours total. FWIW my baby is way, way low and in perfect position.

  • On the ball topic- I've used one for years for patients and my exercise. The closer I got to my due date the more it killed my back. It did help get baby lower tho. They had me on one in the hospital and after 10 min I got off- it was SO painful in my pelvic area. So they can go either way. Def make sure it's blown up enough and tall enough. And gentle bounces. Good luck! PS- kudos to anyone who can still get their feet off the ground for jumping jacks. I have up after five ;)
  • For those of you that have had inductions, or have them set this go around... how many days past EDD did you go in for it. I'm not going to get induced unless I go beyond my due date... but I was just wondering if there was a normal amount of days (I honestly don't think I could wait until the 42 weeks mark)

Haven't had an induction but my midwives will let me go to 42 weeks. However if I am still pregnant at 41 weeks, I need to get an ultrasound and non stress test to make sure baby is still ok in there, has enough fluid, etc. my first DD came at 40 weeks 6 days so hoping this baby comes sooner! 39 weeks now!

  • Likely a very dumb question here...I've been thinking about the temperature in our house when LO comes, and I guess my question is this:
Does the house need to stay at a consistent temp for LO?  We usually have it at 70 or 71 during the day, but typically turn it down to 67 or 68 at night.  Will LO be ok with this fluctuation, or should we plan to pick a temp and leave it there indefinitely?

@megash113 - I'm pretty tall and its comfortable for a long time. I use it to help with hip pain and its been a life saver. Maybe you need a bigger ball? Just a thought.

I got the one that's supposedly right for my height but it's killing me. I'm going to try again in the morning. Maybe it was just after too long of a day or something.

I have been going to the sensory room with my students every day just to sit on the ball!!  I has been amazing for my back pain... definitely try again.  Although, I will say that I don't "bounce" as much as I "roll" my hips back and forth and in circles.  I am getting one for home because I had a 1st grader tell me on Tuesday that I "was really squishing that ball down a lot."!!

Lol!! I'm a teacher so I can appreciate this one :) thanks for the laugh!

Pre-baby, we kept the house at 70. Her first night home, we saw that her fingers and nose were getting cold, so we upped it to 75. She has been fine since then.

75?! Are you wearing shorts and t-shirts?

We have out temp set to 70, everyone seems to be comfortable. I miss sleeping in the cold, we used to have our thermostat programmed to do this, but I would be chilly waking to feed DD.

Lol.. Our house runs cold. Even though it says 75 on the thermometer, the bedrooms aren't over 70. If we slept in the living room, we could keep the temp at 70. Our rooms are small... And our thermostat is in the living room. It stays warmer than the rest of the house because DH's tv puts off a lot of heat.

  • LO was 3 weeks early and small. I'm having to wake him up in the night to feed him so he can eat every 3 hours. Is that a preemie thing or do all babies eat that often during the night?
  • anyone having issues with LO only eating from one side?!

OMG someone please answer!! LO was in NICU and woken every 3 hours. Now he sleeps for 4 hour stretches during day and not more than 2 @ night. He's EBF and he seems hungry overnight to the point where I'm supplementing BM bottles.

  • I woke DS every 3ish hours when he was a newborn for feeding. I'm not sure how long that lasted. I haven't done any reading about that this go around either, maybe I should get on that.

We've upped our temp to 73 since DS has the coldest room in the house. I'm pretty sure we had it lower last winter when he was in a different bedroom.

How is his growth? You should see your pedi soon for a one-month checkup, it couldn't hurt to ask to change to two 4-hour stretches (or as needed, when he wakes you up) at night.
DS is eating that often at night too, but he's a growth restricted preemie too so we're kind of in the same boat :)

@ziggy903 we have the 1 month appt next Tuesday. I think he's going to be around 6 lbs. dh works overnights so it's only me at night so if it was Ok to let him sleep a little longer...
  • @djtippietoes yeah the 3-hour schedule all by yourself SUCKS. Hopefully his growth is wonderful and your doctor will be okay with something that let's you sleep a little more!

  • My LO sometimes has 5-6 hour stretches of sleep. We just had a weight check at the pedi this morning, and she is back to her birthweight. We asked about the long stretches of sleep-she said it is fine-baby will make up for it at some point (it just means feedings every 1 1/2-2 hours for awhile until she gets 'caught up') we are working on trying to get her long stretch to be overnight-because waking up every 2 hours is for the birds! I don't have enough time to change diaper, feed, use the bathroom, and get comfy again (much less asleep!!) and she is up and hungry!

  • I had a first degree tear with one stitch. I'm 12 days pp and feeling almost completely back to normal. My nurse at discharge said no baths for 6 weeks. Is this normal?
  • We use cream a few times a day even with no rash just to be safe. Try switching to a different brand of cream. My sisters swear by "Triple Cream" and it's healing powers.
  • @psk yeah he was back to his birthweight In like a week.
  • @clb2196 I agree with psk's advice. Give some open air time. We didn't do super long stretches, I'd just let him hang out and fan his little bottom for a bit. I also patted him dry with a Gerber cloth diaper before putting the diaper back on. We mainly used Desitin and slathered it on pretty thick. We occasionally used Butt Paste.

  • Another dumb FTM question and I apologize in advance if this has already been covered elsewhere BUT tried searching this board & nada. For you F'14ers with outside babies, did Braxton Hicks feel noticeably different than REAL labor contractions?

I've had BH since the 2nd tri so am kind of oblivious to the constant tightening. Also had lower abdominal pressure in my hips & sharp pains to my lady bits aka "lightning crotch". DH is obsessed with monitoring my "contractions" and from his research tells me that because they're regular (about 8 min apart, lasting 1 min), don't subside when I walk around, change positions, drink water, etc that this IS early labor and not BH.

I've heard that "you'll know" because you can't continue what you're doing through the pain but then also heard stories of women who didn't know they'd been having contractions until their water broke. Probably being paranoid because I'm willing this pregnancy to be done but since everyone has a different pain tolerance and experience, thought it was worth asking. TIA!
