Anyone have a LO or (older child) with nut allergies

LO was just diagnosed with a peanut allergy.  Curious if anyone else is or has dealt with this and has any tips or advice for me.

I know to read labels and stuff but any other tips would be great.  What to do/ask when eating out.  What brands to buy and which ones not too.  Etc.

Thanks!

  • Lurker here...

Check out the Food Allergy board.  Also, when going out to eat, most chain restaurants have their allergy info printed out or even a special menu you can ask to look at.  I know Chik-fil-A uses peanut oil, and probably a lot of places do for fried foods, so that's an obvious one to either avoid or make sure to check on.  Also, DS loves soy nut butter as a substitute for peanut butter.  It's great for an easy, on-the-go meal--especially if we'll be eating out and I don't know if I will be able to get him something he can eat.

My DS also has a diary allergy, which I have found to be way more difficult to deal with .  The peanut allergy is NBD as far as finding food he can have.

  • THanks...we found out because he had a reaction after eating peanut butter and jelly (not his first time and we weren't sure it was peanut butter) but went to get him tested at the allergist and sure enough he came up positive
  • These are links I foind helpful but we are going the peanut desensitization route. https://mypeanutdesensitization.blogspot.com https://community.kidswithfoodallergies.org/pages/community My LO has both peanut and egg allergy diagnosed last month. As per my allergists recommendations we are giving LO a tiny bit of peanut everyday to hopefully build up a tolerance so he will not react severely when accidently exposed one day. His reactions have never been severe, only reaction where it touched skin so we feel confident this is right decision for us. Message me if you want. Second link is great community like this but for food alleegies. There is a pediatric food allergy boatd
