Breastfeeding

What should I buy?

I am 28 weeks today and plan on EBF my baby. What must have items do I need? Also, I will be having a c section not sure if that info is helpful. So far on my list I have a boppy, nursing bras, and nursing pads.

Re: What should I buy?

  • I use a nursing cover when feeding in public.  I have this kind: https://www.bebeaulait.com/
Also a pump is helpful to have for times when you need a night out (or if going back to work).  Many insurance companies will pay for this.  Bottles for same reason.  (The 4 oz size).
Some nipple cream is good to have on hand.  (Coconut oil or Earth Mama Baby Angel for example).
I also found it helpful to have on hand a book on breastfeeding or the handouts from my breastfeeding class.  And a notebook for the early days when you are keeping track of output.

  • I used my Breast Friend (which is supposedly better than Boppy) for a minute. A pillow worked well, too, but LO quickly outgrew the need for a support.

  • I also like My Breast Friend better for the early months. My DD was tiny and it was really hard to get comfy with a Boppy. I switched to a Boppy around 2 months.

    Lansinoh Lanolin

App for your phone to keep track of feedings/diapers

Nursing tops (I like the tanks with elastic around the top and then I wear a zip up hoodie over them)

Double Electric Pump (hopefully from your insurance)

I've also found a manual pump to e very handy. I like the Medela Harmony

  • For sure nipple cream!!! At first the gel pads were soothing and helpful too!
  • Heating pad for engorgment and help latching. I wish I would have brought mine to the hospital. I also used those lanisoh 3 in one gel pads.

Definelty lanisoh brand lanolin, I tried others and they were yucky. But beware, it will stain. I also really loved those gel soothies.

Once you know BFing is for you I'd put a hands free bra on the list if you'll be pumping and lots and lots of milk storage bags. I love my freestyle pump, but definitely not necessary. Also check out some feeding pillow options. I used a bed pillow for the first 2 months and we just transitioned to the boppy. I'm not personally crazy about the breast friend but a lot of people love it.

  • An easy grip water bottle. I often get thirsty while feeding my LO and find handling a glass difficult, and it doesn't hold enough water.

  • Before you go to the hospital have some snacky type foods in the pantry. Nuts, granola bars, dries fruits, etc. Staying hydrayed and eating enough can be hard when you are nursing and caring for a new baby. Somehow its 3pm and you haven't eaten....

  • Nursing cover, nursing tanks, sweaters that zip for easy access and shells for your nips. The shells saved me when my nipples were healing. They keep the fabric off of them.
  • I had a small caddy, sorry of like a shower caddy stocked with water bottle, nipple cream, breast pads, snacks, etc so that I could grab it wherever I nursed. It also made it easy when I forgot it for someone else to grab what I needed.

Nipple cream! Get an alternative cream to Lanolin in case it doesn't work for you. It never did anything for me. I used Motherlove, and it seriously saved me. Another similar one is made by Earth Mama Angel Baby.

Nursing pads are a must and you should probably add at least one nursing bra in a bigger bra size to your list (I'm regularly a 34B but needed a D size bra after both births. Ugh, engorgement.) I have nursing cover, which is nice to have but not a necessity. And although you can always use just a regular pillow, the Boppy is awesome. Again not a necessity but it doubles as a lounge pillow for baby.
