We are strongly considering this for a middle name. Is one more of a "real" name than another? We are okay with spelling it either way. Will our child have to spell it it out for others either way we choose? (I prefer names that have one main spelling). Any thoughts? Thank you!

Re: Mae vs May spelling
My daughter's middle name is Mae - she is named after my great grandmother.
I'm a 7th generation woman with the middle name "Mae". All the firstborn girls on my mothers side are saddled with the name. I say "saddled" because I absolutely detest my middle name. I love the history behind it and that I have that link to my mom, grandma, great-grandma, etc... but I really, really hate my middle name. I absolutely love my first name though "Kristen"
I had a daughter last year and my mom insisted that I use Mae as her middle name. I didn't. I decided to break the cycle and use Marjorie for her middle name since that was my grandmothers first name. I thought it was a nice way of honoring her, while not giving my poor baby the same awful middle name that I've had to deal with.
I feel like it's a real hillbilly name. When I told DH what my middle name was when we first started dating he said, "Not our kids though, right?" When people ask what the "M" is for, they're always like, "oh"...
