How can you tell the difference between thrush and normal BF troubles? I honestly don't know if I have it or if it's just raw nips from back to back growth spurts.
@whitterpow, from what I've read, you can suspect thrush if you've been breastfeeding pain free and all of a sudden experience nipple and/or breast pain.
I expected it to happen because both I and DD have been on antibiotics recently and I neglectfully didn't get us on any probiotics.
DD has a yeast rash on her bum that the pedi prescribed her cream for (but no white spots in her mouth) and just today I started having sharp, deep, shooting pains in my breasts (mostly my left breast). My nipples also are starting to look a little pink. Looks like I'll be making a call on Monday morning. I *think* I can use the same cream I'm using on her butt for my nips but from what I've read, if you have the shooting pains the yeast has spread to your ducts which requires an oral medication. Womp womp.

Yeah I've looked on google, but I still just am not sure. I suppose it might be worth a trip or a call to the doctor. If it is thrush at least I can get something to make it better and if not I can just suck up the pain.
@Rachel2011, my pedi also mentioned miconazole nitrate as a treatment. I think it is the active ingredient in Monistat, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. She just happened to prescribe the lotrimin. I believe they're both equally effective.

I'm sure that other one would work, but I don't know about an infant ingesting it on the breast. Clortrimazol is considered safe.
I was told it could get worse before getting better as it heals, but for me I started feeling better within 18 hours or so. I felt worse for less than six. But my case wasn't bad, and I don't struggle with Candida overgrowth anyway. People who are prone to yeast infections, athletes foot, etc., might have more trouble.
Yeah, my pain's not horrible. When I get a shooting pain, it makes me think "damn, that hurts" but it's tolerable (definitely something I want to take care of, though). I've always been prone to yeast infections so hopefully this won't be an ongoing problem for LO & I.
@Rachel2011, when I saw pedi, it was for LO only (I wasn't having symptoms at the time). She said the diaper rash should be cleared up in a few days with the cream and to keep using it at least 1-2 weeks past the rash being completely gone. I would assume it's the same for us.

@hjweber Frequent yeast infections are a sign of Candida out of control. You might consider a good probiotic regimen, and I mean a good one. Go to a health food store and get their recommendations.
I agree. I just haven't done it out of pure laziness.

Do you think just a probiotic would help? I mean or is it really more of a lifestyle change?
