Re: stuttering...maybe? speech question

  • How long has she been stuttering?  If it's a new thing I'd say developmental.  If it's been going on for any number of months… 4+ I'd have her re-evaluated by a speech therapist.  Yes it is definitely part of language development, but can also become an issue if it goes on long term.

  • Hmm...I feel like it's been getting progressively worse.  But i'm not sure how many months total. She never actually was given an ST because she lacked the language foundation so she just had developmental and then service coordination.  She was probably 28 months when she started talking and she turns 3 in Feb.  I'll try to keep note of it.  I know she tends to talk very fast so maybe she is trying to talk quicker than her brain can process to get the words out.

  • DS does this, its new...maybe a week now, but its not a studder - it seems he's having difficulty finding the right words to use to complete the thought. I brought it up to his ST, and she wasn't concerned about it...she said, "many children have difficulty with word finding."

When I hear him getting frusterated, I just tell him to take his time and not to worry.

  • One thing to keep in mind, our speech therapist told us that the worst thing you can do for that kind of repetitive word stuttering is point it out to the person. That will make them self-conscious, which will exasperate the problem. The best thing you can do is ignore it, and, of it's developmental, it should go away on it's own in time. It worked for us. J's stuttering did get worse when we initially pointed it out, but got better when we stopped reacting.
