Not great blood work results

I had my second round of blood work done a couple weeks ago and received the report today. Downs and Trisomy are ok, but I received a slightly higher number (2.51) for the neural tube defects. I'm going in for an ultrasound tomorrow and more blood work on Thursday. Has anyone else been in this situation? I'm really nervous

I had a slightly elevated AFP too (that is what the neural tube defect test looks for) - mine was 2.47. I called and talked to the genetics counselor when I got the results and she said that is still a pretty low number and she thought mine was falsely elevated because I had a sub-chorionic hematoma, with some bleeding around 11 weeks. Did you have any first-tri bleeding? She told me they usually see numbers like 5-12 with a neural tube defect. My A/S on Monday showed everything was fine.

Unfortunately, yes, with my first pregnancy with my DD. When I went for the ultrasound we first met with a genetic counselor and then had the ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that my daughter did not have any neural tube defects (like spina bifida) but it did show that she had gastroschisis. With gastroschisis and an omphalocele the AFP is also elevated. Good luck tomorrow I hope in your case that everything is ok. You are in my thoughts and prayers. i too had slightly elevated afp test results.  the ultrasound was normal and i opted for the harmony test which came back normal too.  i am sure yours will have the same results but i know how stressful this is for you.  fx

Mine was the opposite. Low AFP .68 which flagged me for Down syndrome. Had the verifi test and all was fine. There is so much to worry about!

FWIW, my genetics counselor told me the AFP is actually the least accurate of the genetic tests and has a higher rate of false positives. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that's the case here.

I also got an elevated result - 2.05. My u/s is scheduled for next wed. I prob won't have fingernails by then

@saraincolorado2013 - I only had implantation bleeding when I took the preg test at 5 weeks. I'm glad your U/S came out fine.

Thoughts and prayers for all with funky numbers. I've had funky results for ds with two kids so I know how stressful it can be. The worrying never ends. Once you get past this, you worry about milestones, autism, kindergarten readiness, etc. It really never ends.

I had elevated results, also. I had my ultrasound on Monday and the dr thought everything looked fine. I hope you have similar results with your ultrasound.

I had just posted about the AFP test and whether or not to get it. I think it's a few threads back. A majority of the responses were from ladies who got false positives. Apparently the rate is 1/9 for a false positive in this test. I'm sure all is well--don't worry too much!

I actually failed the Harmony test twice, and just had to re-do it again last week. Still awaiting results.   They told me the first 2 times that there wasn't enough of the baby's DNA in my blood to get a good sample, so the test was inconclusive.  I'm a bigger girl, so I have more blood volume, I guess.  Very frustrating,  as I had the test done at 11 weeks, again at 13 weeks, and then again at 18 weeks.   Supposed to hear results by next Wednesday, and I'm praying it worked this time, and everything is normal.   I have my anatomy scan next week too.      Saying prayers for you that it's all okay!!   (and honestly...  for ALL of us!)
