Pregnant after IF

Announcements? UPDATED

When did or do you plan on telling people about the baby? Our close family already knows, and we had a plan on how to do it today for everyone else (it is DS birthday, and we wanted to send a picture of him with the ultrasound picture like a present since he has been asking for a sibling for so long), but now that it is here I am unsure. I am 12w2d today, and we had the NT screening on Tuesday at 12w--strong heartbeat and good nuchal fold thickness, although the blood work isn't back yet. DH wants to go ahead and thinks maybe it would help me be more excited than anxious. We are total opposites--he is not a worrier at all. I know everyone is different, but I am hoping others experiences will help me decide!

Update--Thanks for the replies. Figures this afternoon the genetic counselor called me and said my risk of downs based on the blood work from the first trimester screening was increased, and they recommend additional testing. It should be 1:370 but is 1:110, so still only about 1% but higher than expected. Something else to worry about :( I am assuming we will wait for the additional results before announcing now.

Re: Announcements? UPDATED

  • Right now only DH's parents know. I will be 12 weeks tomorrow, and we will tell my parents on Saturday. We put off telling them because it's going to be a tough thing to do (my mom is an alcoholic and we don't want her to play a very significant role in the baby's life...). We will tell our close friends at a "game night" the following weekend, and announce to everyone else with a photo on fb of our dog with a sign we made stating that she is being "promoted to big sister" (cheesy, I know) on Valentine's Day(even cheesier, but it works for us). By then I will be 17 weeks.

  • We made the big announcement after the NT scan. We didn't wait for blood work because the baby was so active with a strong heartbeat and the nuchal fold was at a great measurement. I think its always hard to take that leap and tell people but the chance of something going wrong for you is now only at 3%. Its what ever your comfortable with but I hope you can let go of some anxiety and enjoy this, I know its easier said then done but what got me through or gets me through is today i'm pregnant and for today i'm going to be as happy as possible and if tomorrow brings bad news then ill worry about it tomorrow.
  • I'm nearly 18 weeks, have had no serious issues, and am still tip-toeing into telling people.  I find it's much easier to tell complete strangers / those who I don't see often than those close to me, but with each appointment I get a little more confident and expand the circle a little   It is totally true that the more people you tell the more exciting it gets.  There honestly hasn't been a single person I've told who've I regretted telling after the fact, so I don't know what my problem is!  Good luck!

  • Our parents knew right away because of the SCH I was dealing with, as did my principal at work and some close coworkers who were affected by my absence. We made the official announcement with family right before our NT, only because we were all together the day before the appointment. I told the rest of my coworkers at 14 weeks and my students at 15. I was really nervous with each reveal and nearly backed out each time, but DH kept me sane. He kept telling me that it's like pulling a bandaid (negative association, I know!), but he was right. Once I took a deep breath and just did it, I felt so much love and support. It also made the pregnancy feel more real. Good luck! You'll know when it feels right for you.

  • I'm sure all is fine but ill keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
  • I hope your wait isn't very long, and that you get good news.  Ours odds after our A/S were 1:100 for Downs, and it helped me to look at it like this:  LO had a 99% chance of not having it.  We had an amnio and it turned out to be negative after all.  Good luck, and I hope you will keep us posted.  FX for you and your LO.
