MSG in Chinese food

We just had some pretty decent Chinese food and found out it contained msg. Anyone have experience with this? Online appears to say that when eaten in small doses no biggie during pregnancy. Trouble is..I want the leftovers and DH is concerned I shouldn't eat them. So who should win this battle? What would you do?

Re: MSG in Chinese food

  • MSG is basically just salt.

  • MSG (despite its off-putting name) is, I believe, just a salty seasoning. Some people are sensitive or allergic to it. If you aren't, it shouldn't be a problem. I'd treat it like an unhealthy high-sodium thing... Okay, but not something to have all the time. I live in an area with a large Chinese population and it has never occurred to me to ask about MSG, so obviously I would eat the leftovers!

  • MSG is everywhere... check labels. Especially on snack foods. You might be surprised how commonly used it is. I try to avoid it and have noticed it in lots of things you wouldn't think of (monosodium glutamate).  Also, when thinking abt those studies - considering the dose is important... so nobody get too scared.
  • Mhmmmm I love chinese food. Now I am craving it!

  • I've also been eating chinese food for lunch dinner breakfast and lunch again. Weeeee!
  • MSG is monosodium glutamate and its poison, but im sad to tell you in the US its basically in everything... Almost every mayo, seasoning, potato chips, anything that says "natural flavorings", etc... Not only Chinese food..

  • It won't hurt you or the baby unless you eat it in giant quantities all the time.  My dad can't eat it because it makes him puke.  The rest of us do just fine with it.  It's also not in all Chinese food.  My dad found a perfectly good restaurant that doesn't use it.  If you're concerned, try to find one that doesn't use it for next time.  In the meantime, don't waste the leftovers :)
