Hitting/mean tone

So now that the trauma of the other day has somewhat subsided, I'm trying to figure out this hitting thing. What do you do if your kid hits you during a temper fit?

And what about when they talk ugly? Em picked up this thing of saying "no" in a very mean tone, like an angry growl. I really dislike it and have been ignoring it so far but am not sure that's the best approach.
