Post partum swelling?

My legs and feet are so swollen. They feel like tree trunks. If you had post partum swelling (probably all c-section moms), when did it get better?

The skin on my legs and feet are so tight it hurts when I bend them.

Re: Post partum swelling?

  • I didn't have a c-section but I was super swollen for about 3 weeks after delivery. Hang in there...

  • I had a c-section, and terrible swelling. I elevated my legs as often as possible, walked a bit, and used compression socks. All of these things helped, but about 2 weeks pp I got some night sweats that almost completely took away the swelling. I'm now 17 days pp and back to normal! Hope it goes away quick for you!
  • My ankles/feet were comically large. And soooo uncomfortable. By 10 days pp they were back to normal. Hang in there!

My fraternal twin boys. Born Sept 2013.
  • Mine went down the day after we brought the babies home so 9 days. But before that they were ridiculously swollen until then. On day 9 I woke up with totally normal feet and ankles.

  • I had shrek sized lower legs/ feet! No c-section. Swelling went down after about 4-5 days pp. had 3 nights of crazy sweats and was back to normal.
  • I had little to no swelling before delivery but had such horrible swelling postpartum and I delivered vaginally.  At about day 8 I lost 7 lbs of water weight literally overnight (I weighed before bed and then in the morning).  The night sweats were horrid.

  • C section mama here with crazy bad swelling post partum. Same issue- painful skin, couldn't bend my knees or wear anything other than XL pj bottoms and socks. I had to even sleep on the couch by I couldn't get up the stairs or into our bed (it was too high to lift my leg). It was absolutely awful. About 10 days pp it was dramatically better and about 2 weeks I was back to normal. Elevate, walk a lot and drink tons of water. GL :).

  • Thanks so much everyone. I can't wait for it to get better.

  • I wrapped cabbage leaves around them per my PP doula's suggestion. I couldn't believe how well that worked!!!mine was sooo bad it hurt to walk. Lasted about 3 wks.
  • My post partum swelling went down drastically after one week.  But, I had severe swelling before I gave birth due to pre-e.  Like pp said, I was losing 5-7 lbs a day as well.  I figured out that I gained about 25-30 lbs over water, no joke!

  • I didn't have any swelling prior to delivery and was induced and delivered vaginally. I started swelling a little bit at the hospital and my legs and feet blew up around day 3. I used compression stockings and elevated my feet, which helped. I think it went away around 10 days or so.

I was vaginal but I was painfully swollen for two weeks (like, standing on my balloon feet was almost enough to make me cry the first week, and more like walking on sharp rocks the second) I wasn't completely unswollen until about a month pp.
Mind you, I had horrible edema close to the end
