Auntie can you point me in the right direction

We talked before about my sons 504.

Now that we have a DX of PDD-NOS, an anxiety disorder, ADHD, and ODD. With delays and issues with certain areas like memory and skills like reading, the school is saying he does not qualify for any services. He does get councling once a week.

What are my next steps? If I were to move him back into Oklahoma I the school he was in they would just change his last IEP for the new DX.

I am not sure how to move up to he next person because his teacher last year and this year agree he would benefit. I do not want my son to get to behind and I know I need to fight.

Re: Auntie can you point me in the right direction

  • Thank you for getting back to me.

DS is behind academically in almost all areas of education. His teacher says he will usually play alone and has a hard time in group activities. Reading is a very hard thing for him (he had some testing done right before thanksgiving and we get the results next week, by the developmental eye doctor who is thinking dyslexia). A big thing in the classroom is that he can not move on without finishing the material they are working on. If he messes up on something he will throw it away or put a huge X on it and start over. His current teacher and former teacher work with him during their own free time to try and keep him from getting to far behind. From testing he is very smart but he can not present the information back in a manor the school would like.

Another thing is the school has not done their own testing. Last year when we moved here and transferred him into the school he had an IEP (from a different state) they told me then that what was listed was not recognized in this state. I requested then in righting for testing, a year later and nothing. His Ped. got tired of waiting and referred us out to a physiatrist who tested him over the course of the summer to get the current DXs.

I am just lost as to what to do, I know I going to have to really fight but not sure of all the resources and rights we have and want to be prepared.

  • Thanks I will look into the groups you suggested.

As for dyslexia it does run in the family. I am horrible at writing and grammar, some I do blame on auto correct but the most part it's me.

    Thank you
