I am at the 5-week stage and my GP told me I have to wait until I'm 20 weeks to see an Ob-Gyn. I feel like that's way too long to wait, and that he might just want to cash in on my frequent visits in the meantime. Anyone had to wait 20 weeks to see/get referred to an ob-gyn?!?!
Yes, this is how it works in Canada (except that our GPs aren't cashing in on it). Here, unless you get in with a midwife clinic, you see your GP until late in the 2nd trimester or early 3rd and then they refer you to an OB. If you're high risk or need specialized care for some reason, then it's sooner.
As long as things are progressing normally, your GP should be able to handle it.
I live in Canada and that's how it works here. Unless you have complications, your GP can provide adequate prenatal care until you go on to see your OB.
