Treats for neighbors during holidays?

Does anyone bake anything or give anything else (like a box of chocolates) to neighbors for the holidays? I know some of you feel they wouldn't eat homemade because its gross, but we probably don't have to rehash that.

I think it'd be nice to take the kids door to door to say hi and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and give a little something. Last year some kids (from 3 houses, they came together) brought us homemade cookies and it was really sweet. We only know a few of the neighbors so far, it'd be a nice way to meet more.

Does anyone give to or receive from neighbors? What kinds of things?

  • I usually buy a case of wine and drop off a bottle to people around the 'hood.
  • I think it's a sweet gesture if you like your neighbors.  We have a lot of weird people on our block and don't say more than "hi" to most of them.  We get along with our neighbor 3 doors down, he is a single guy who has shared custody of his 6ish year old daughter.  Last year after baking a ton of cookies I put together a plate of them for DH to drop off.

  • It seems like we're surrounded by older couples, so we'll probably be baking something and visiting briefly. It's a sweet thing to do. My DH was outside in the garden/taking care of chickens all summer so he met them all, but I haven't. So I think I'd like to be able to say hello to them.

  • We all exchange baked goods usually. Been in their kitchens and they've been in mine :)
  • I gave Yankee candles to the neighbors in our previous neighborhood. I didn't do anything last year and probably won't do anything this year because we moved and I don't know the neighbors beyond waving to them once and a while.
  • I make a bunch of different types of cookies and give a few of our neighbors a tin/plate.  Only like, 2 of them give cookies around too, but oh well.  We all kind of do this or that for each other throughout the year so a tin of cookies is nothing.

I always do, I love love the neighborhood we live in, along with all our neighbors! I also want to do the silly thing from Pinterest with a box of ho hos and ding dongs, a couple of them have likely seen it on Pinterest but a few probably haven't.
You should make your cousin some laxative cookies.
For real, that stick would slide right out.

  • We'll probably bake cookies.  I didn't last year because I was so super pregnant and feeling bitchy, but we usually do.  I love gingerbread!!  I'll eat things my neighbors bring over even if I'm iffy about things at my school.  Two different groups of people with different hygiene. :)  We always leave cookies for the post carrier and garbage pick-up people too.

I wanted to do that for the mail carrier and garbage people too! Where do I leave them for the garbage picker-uppers, on top of the trash can? lol

  • We give potted poinsettia's to the neighbors. They are mostly single old ladies.

  • One of the neighbors has a cookie swap and we are all invited.  All the neighborhood kids go caroling one night and we make it kind of a potluck thing.  All the moms try to get out to dinner (no kids) before Christmas too.  Lately even the dads have been getting together

So we don't really exchange per se, but we celebrate together.  We are pretty close to our neighbors and hang out regularly

Ha!  Yes, one year I did.  With a  big note and all wrapped up pretty so it didn't look like trash.  However, I usually just walk them out to them when they stop. :)  Food on the garbage is kind of gross.  I always had a xmas break before and now I'm home, and the truck is so loud, we know they are coming a block away. :)  The mail carrier, I used to just leave it on the porch, but now we have a mailbox by the street, so I don't know on that one. She's fast, unpredictable times, and I don't think I can catch her.
