Pos skin test, negative blood test?

Anyone had this?  We were back for the checkup with the allergist and found we have hopefully outgrown the egg allergy and peanut levels continue to decline.  But suddenly tree nuts reacted on the skin test.  Blood test was negative though.  Not sure what to think?  I've read online they can both  have false positives and false negatives which is not that helpful.

Re: Pos skin test, negative blood test?

  • I don't really have an answer to your question because I'm not sure. I do know that DS's allergist prefers to do skin tests over b/w for accuracy.

  • Apparently no one really knows based on views v. responses:)  Ah well, we were already avoiding tree nuts due to risk of cross-contamination.  I was just curious because I think it's confusing.  Thanks!

  • It can go either way.

    Positive skin/neg blood
    Positive blood/negative skin

We have had both and reactions both ways
  • We had this situation with cashew, the allergist wanted us to do an oral challenge in the office (they give the child a tiny piece, wait 20 minutes, give double the amount, etc.)
We still haven't done the oral challenge so I don't know what the outcome is...

  • From my understanding, blood tests can give false positives, that is why my dr did the skin test to confirm the allergy to tree nuts with my son.
