On a tangent, but I think it's a disgrace that members of our armed services qualify for WIC. They risk their lives, they should get paid well enough to support the family that might lose them.
@Veganlady I totally agree, but there're also plenty of military families that qualify for WIC that wouldn't if they were civilians. To use my husband as an example again, at his pay rate his housing allowance would have been around $2200 in Hawaii. Since we lived in housing, that amount was just automatically sent to the housing company. It wasn't reflected in his pay stub. Neither were all of the utilities which were also covered by housing, which, in Hawaii, were easily $300 per month for electricity and water. So, if just looking at pay stubs, which is how I understand you qualify, my husband appears to have been making a whopping $30,000 less per year than he actually was.
This thread is awesome. Government aid, toilet paper and mac n cheese all in one thread.

There is not a single person reading this who should not be offended. Not just because someone on government assistance has an ipad and is getting an elective ultrasound that many others who aren't on gov assistance cannot afford, but more so because this person has pretty much declared that she is somehow above working for a living. While the rest of us work through debilitating MS, scrimp and save to be able to afford a few weeks off after the baby is here and deal with the daily stresses of balancing pregnancy, kids and a career, her and her DH have decided that she should just take it easy and not work while all of the rest of us work to pay for her pregnancy. That, more than the ipad or ultrasound, is what truly offends me!
And it should offend every single other person out there who is a tax payer. Heck, it should offend the people who are down on their luck or who are disabled and can't find a job and need government assistance because it is people like her who give those on government assistance a bad rep. Plus, she is taking money away from someone who truly needs it!

This thread annoys me to no end, especially since OP hasn't returned. MH makes really good money, and $200 is still a lot to me. I grew up with a penny pinching dad so some of that must have stuck. My sister is married and her H only makes $13 an hour. She's a waitress, so she makes minimum wage plus tips. You know what? They own a home. They have 2 reliable cars. They have their own insurance. She got pregnant before they were married, and she paid out of pocket (from her savings! what a concept) for Kaiser insurance. His insurance sucks and they've had horrible luck medically (mastitis that required surgery, a 4 day stay in the hospital for her DD, and a m/c that resulted in a D&C) so they have lots of bills...not to mention her school bills and the recent Terminix bill for having their house tented for termites. They pay everything, on time. It's possible.
People who mooch off of others really bug me.
PS- if you do some research, you can find cheap/free u/s. A tech works for my Drs office and for his patients she'll do them for $20. Also, I know someone who went to u/s tech school and is now a certified tech. She hasn't been able to find a job yet so she can still do scans at her school. For free. Sure, it's an hour away, but for a free 3D/4D u/s down the road it's worth it.
I don't post a lot because this board is insanely mean IMO but I do want to say that I had mine done at 16 weeks for $55. This thread got out of control and I'm not here to say who's wrong or right but if you're such a hard worker and know the value of a dollar I can't believe you're not working because your dh doesn't want you working in first trimester. Pregnancy isn't an illness. I work because I don't have a choice medicade , wic, and not having a nice house and things just isn't an option to me! Ok rant over good Lu k
Insanely mean? Try insanely honest. We deal in REAL LIFE terms here, not puking puppy dogs and rainbows and unicorn farts. Nice try though.
The big doggies bit you at work?! Oh no, poor baby...here here, please sit down and put up your feet while I go to work and get punched in the throat, spit on, and called a bitch by my patients then collect my paycheck and see they assraped my withholdings so you could get a free ultrasound from Medicaid. I was young and stupid once but I kept that shit off the Internet so strangers couldn't call me out. The stupid is strong with this one...
Yay for being PG and an RN... Totes wish I could just stay home and relax but I have to go take care of dumbasses like OP for 12 hours straight. Oh gosh, is my calling you a dumbass mean? GTF over it... I'm 23 and resent you for making young 20somethings look so lazy and selfish.
honestly, i think it's people like the OP that are causing this country to go directly down the shitter.
this insane sense of entitlement people have blows my mind. it's like when you hear about people parking their mercedes outside their section 8 apartment. sitting there posting from a $500 ipad about how they are considering going on governement assistance. REALLY?!
if you have money for "special luxuries" for yourself, then you should have PLENTY of money to buy the basic necessities covered by WIC.
Beyond all that it is just dumb to say saving $200 here and $60 there isn't going to help them get out quicker. It certainly can. And if the OP wanted out bad enough she would curb her spending and make it a priority. I would eat mac n cheese every night, not buy anything extra, wipe my ass with one ply TP...to get out of a bad situation.
This reminds me of my life. We're saving for our first house and living pretty tight, but I feel like we're doing pretty well because we're still buying the brand name toilet paper. (and loads of ramen, but hey, cushy toilet paper.)
@pandadair I'm glad your DH is well taken care of. Those are taxpayer dollars I'm happy to spend. I get so ragey when I hear about our military folks getting screwed in any way, whether it's incompetence at the VA, GI Bill cuts because of sequester, etc etc...
The only current military person I know well enough to talk money with is my SIL's boyfriend. He's an enlisted Marine and gets paid squat. Though that is with on-base housing and no dependants. I think it's a job that should pay well, both because that would attract quality people and because it's just the right thing to do.
I get stabby thinking about the incompetence at the VA as well, not only because I'm a vet, but because I worked for an attorney who helped vets get their benefits and there are Vietnam vets still waiting!

Pretty much everyone here has nailed it. The main bullet point here is that you have to make sacrifices sometimes to better your situation. We lived with my mom for two years so that we could save for a house. In those two years, we didn't buy extravagant things or go on vacation - we paid down our credit cards and we saved as much as we could, and as a result we got the house we really wanted and didn't have to settle for anything less. It was difficult at times, but we did it in order to get what we really wanted. These are sacrifices that we chose to make to better our situation. I think OP should consider the fact that sacrificing an extraneous ultrasound might help her to better her situation, too. Sure, $200 may not go far, but it's absolutely a start. As cliche as it sounds, every little bit helps.

I read your reply and thought "YEAH! Stop making us young 20-somethings look bad and irresponsible!" Then I remembered I'll be 27 in May. Ugh. When did I get so old? Haha.

don't make me pull out Asher's side eye for that old comment. Some of us are uh hem, quite a bit older
Ok so $200 would make a huge dent on a deposit here.. I am on WIC and have what called Tenncare. However I work full time and my boyfriend also works ... I have my own insurance so the Tenncare is supplemental .. that being said I think spending $200 for an elective u/s is crazy when there are so many other things to save for baby ... I looked at it myself along with a doppler and decided that rent and electricity are much more important along with Christmas for the 3 kids we already have ( 2 really .. my daughter has already said she wants me to buy for the smaller ones and she doesn't need anything ) ... $200 would be a fantastic Christmas for these kids who have not had much before I came into their lives ...
I live with MIL, and I'm not currently employed, but that is partly because I am taking max allowance of college credits to get my ALA degree before baby comes and i begin my transfer to a university for my bachelors and masters; and partly because I had a part time job on top of school but I had to quit due to a complication of the pregnancy that has made it impossible to do my physically demanding job (I moved large retail fixtures, and processed 50+ lb boxes of products, while setting up new displays at a retail store.) Husband works full time to support us while I finish school, and we are saving what we can while paying off his college debt.
My in laws offered to have us move in because it helps us to save quickly and also helps them save while they finish the last couple years of mortgage payments. We pay half of all utilities,I take care of the house work in between classes, and we buy our own food and groceries. We are basically renting a room from the in laws while we take care of our debts and save for a home of our own. I penny pinch like crazy to make sure we save what we can. I go to resale shops for clothes because i feel spending $$ on new clothes is irresponsible, i coupon cut, hit yard sales, and i even learned to cut my husband's hair because it saves us $20 a month. Now that I'm pregnant, everyone keeps asking me to get on WIC, but I refuse to because we can support ourselves even though we qualify for the program.
With baby on the way, we pinch even more. We dont go out to eat, we dont buy what we dont absolutely need, and we try to budget an extra $50 a paycheck into an account for baby. We aren't buying Christmas presents this year either, and any money my family sends for the holidays is going towards the baby. We didnt even do the Panorama test because it was elective and $150 copay, and we knew that it was money we could save for other important things we needed for baby.
Sorry, but to say that $200 is just extra spending cash seems completely childish and asinine after reading how badly you want out. Wait a few weeks, get the free test, and save that money to better yourselves. Yes, your DH might "want" the elective ultrasound, but growing up means being able to decipher between wants and needs.
OP I started the $200 thing, it was in reference to how much money you could sell your IPAD for and then I rough guess $60 for your ultrasound. Either way, I stand by thoughts on this.
Also we went ahead and did the U/S. It was so beautiful. She measure at 13w6d so she is right on track. Also confirmed it is in fact a GIRL at several different angles. She was moving around a lot. It was such a blessing to finally see our little angel. It was well worth the WHOPPING $45! I'm not going to stick around for the drama. I have enough of that at home. But you ladies really shouldn't let someone else life on the internet affect you so deeply. I just posted a rant about my mil, not how I'm begging for change on the street. We aren't dirt poor. We CHOOSE to stay with his mom because we don't want to get stuck in a lease somewhere and he gets a job and we need to move. He was active duty for 3 years, he will not be going back to basic. Everything will happen very fast and we don't want to get stuck trying to get out of a lease. And for those of you who say I don't like your opinions, but I asked for it. I never asked for anyones opinion on this. Just sharing. You'll get over it. Have fun talking about me. See ya!
Ok but you are CHOOSING to take advantage of tax payer money so that you can "have a stress free first tri". Even $45 could have gone towards a can or two of formula if you need to go that route, a few bags of diapers, food for a week for you and your H (yes $45 a week is possible if you know what you're doing) or hell even a damn car seat for your car! You know the necessary things in life!
Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

OP I think you're a liar. No job because no car became no job because you don't want to get bit by a dog. Living with MIL is now by CHOICE even though when everybody was telling you to get out of there, you had excuse after excuse as to why you couldn't, NONE of which involved needing to be free from a lease. Yes, you'd be better off leaving the board. Nothing you say here again will ever be taken seriously. I wouldn't even be able to flame you properly, FFS. I wouldn't want to waste my time insulting a lie!
I can't believe I'm so late on discovering this thread.
You've been mercilessly flamed for good reason.
Might I refer you back to an old nub post where the OP had an early 3D US...... If that looks like it's worth "your" "hard earned" money, by all means. Get it framed too, they really are quite exquisite.
I had a 3D with my 3yr old my first is 13yr and when I was preg with her they didn't have such a thing so when I did it with my 2nd one I was soooo excited it's amazing!! Good Luck. I'm prolly gonna do a elective u/s too bc we wanna find out before Christmas too we want to have someone (I want to be surprised too) wrap a gift either for a girl/boy and have my 2 girls open the gift Christmas morning.
I went to a specialist for my ultrasound at 13 weeks, said a girl... It's 99% accurate. I am still waiting on the one I am having 3 weeks from now, but I am pretty set on it being a girl. The genitals (I have researched) are formed at 7weeks... The following weeks they just become more evident. If you want to know, just do it! Don't worry about what everyone else has to say :-) happy thanksgiving

Genitals are formed but look the same for both male and female at 7 weeks.

So from this thread i've learned that the OP isn't working because she doesn't have a car, i mean the big dogs were bitey, i mean her husband wants to her be stress free. and they can't move out of her MIL's house because she can't work because she doesn't have a car, actually it's to save money, wait i mean it's because they don't have enough money to move, actually they have plenty of money for luxury stuff but they don't want to get stuck in another lease, wait i mean they are so strapped they need to go on WIC to feed themselves. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />think i get it now!
