Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Exhaustion... When does it end?!

When does the "new-mom-complete-total-utter-exhaustion-all-the-freakin-time" end?

LO is 7 months. STTN most nights, for 11 or 12 hours. Takes 2 naps a day, usually for 2+hrs. I work from home part time. Usually get about 7 hrs sleep myself.

Shouldn't I be getting back to normal feeling now?

I'm not. Completely exhausted by 5pm everyday. No energy, and can barely have a coherent conversation which makes me so frustrated. It's like my brain is broken.

WHEN does it get better? I am so much more concerned with when I get my pre-preg brain back than my pre-preg body!! Am I alone on this?

Re: Exhaustion... When does it end?!

  • Do you work with your baby with you?  That's likely a huge part of it because baby and work are both very consuming things.  Hate to say it but at 3.5 years in, I'm still exhausted because parenting doesn't stop :)

  • Have you been checked for anemia? It sounds like this might be more than just new mom exhaustion...
  • I have heard this is the easy part. That Wait till my 3.5year old DS is in sports and school! My friends have said talk about exhaustion. Hate to say it but the day DS1 was born, the exhaustion has since not ended! I'm a SAHM and my energy level goes at about 3pm everyday.

  • Bleehhhhhhhhhh. Not the answer I was hoping for! I feel bad for feeling like this too because I know so many of your LOs don't sleep through the night and we're lucky that ours does. I might go to the Dr too though. I have hypothyroidism (very mild) but the comment about anemia made me wonder if my thyroid dosage needs to be adjusted. Until then, I guess I'll keep gulping down the caffeine (is it bad that the girl at the starbucks drive thru knows me now?) and muddling through! :)
  • I hear ya. DS2 STTN as well and naps twice a day. I think just because there is never any downtime with kids. You are always on your feet. I try and take walks with LO's. Seems to help some. Hang in there mama.

  • It hasn't for me yet. At almost 7 months she still isn't sleeping thru the night and doesn't take good naps either. Plus I work full time.

    New Mommy!!!

  • I totally the second the loss of brain cells.  I use to joke that I was afraid they would come revoke my degrees since I got dumbed down so much with this baby.

Yesterday we had swim class.  the 10th and final...I managed to completely forget my locker combination...of the lock I've used weekly for 10 weeks...that we've used for years.  Stood there for over 15min with a soaking wet baby and my friend and her baby had their gear in my locker.  Completely brain dead.

I can feel my brain gears slowly turning when I try to think...slow, squeaky wheel.  Makes me seriously wonder how some moms get up and go to work as a doctor everyday.

While I am still exhausted I have certainly adapted greatly since the first 6 weeks.  Those weeks were brutal and I never thought I'd adapt to the sleep deprivation.

I would definitely check the thyroid level though...no need to add that on top of mommy exhaustion!!
