Subchorionic Hemorrhage

danabsddanabsd member
edited October 2013 in May 2014 Moms

Last night, as I was getting ready for bed I noticed come bright red blood on my TP.  I FREAKED.  I have done this once before, I know my body and this is NOT normal.  I called H to come look, he was able to stay a little calmer than I and suggested we go to the ER.  I obliged, we called my mom to come stay with Beb (who was asleep) and left.  P.S. Real ER, nothing like Greys Anatomy.
Thankfully, there were not a lot of people there, they took blood, gave me a RhoGAM Shot (boo.) and did an u/s.  Not in that order.  I cried when we saw the heartbeat was there and beating strong at 162 and I could see H breath a huge sigh of relief.  The tech even let us take a live feed video (our OB does not allow recording devices)!
The reason for the bleeding? A small Subchorionic Hemorrhage.  I am on pelvic rest; no sex, exercise or heavy lifting until I get the all clear from my OB.  I am so relieved that it was nothing super serial but it still does put me at high risk for a miscarriage and it's pretty much all I can think about all.the.time.

Has anyone dealt with something similar?

I could use your Ts&Ps. :) AND listen to your body!

Re: Subchorionic Hemorrhage

  • Yeah, I have one, too, and it sucks. Mine's about 1 cm in size and I've had it for about 3 weeks - at least, that's how long I've been spotting. I'm hoping that when you said you're at a high risk for miscarriage that you meant slightly highER. My doctor said that the risk of miscarriage increases slightly, but most women go onto have healthy pregnancies, especially when the bleed is small. It's scary no matter what! Try to relax and enjoy that everthing is ok with baby right now!

That's probably better wording, it was the ER doc at midnight so I was/am still trying to process everything.
Thank you for the words of reassurance,  :)

I had a SCH at 9w2d. So scary!! Sent us racing to the ER. The bleeding stopped within a few days, but I'll be 12 weeks tomorrow and had some more bleeding this past Saturday and yesterday. My OB brought us in just to make sure everything was okay and our twins are doing perfectly fine. (They didn't really see much bleeding on the u/s images either.) Try to stay calm & don't lose hope! :)
  • I also have a small SCH and have been spotting on and off for almost 6 weeks. I am 10.5 weeks now. It is so stressful, I know! I am also trying to take it easy which is hard with my 2 year old. Will your doc ultrasound you again soon to see if it is healing? My best to you!!
  • @MinaE01...how often is your doc checking yours via ultrasound? Or how are they monitoring yours? I am just curious and thought you are a great person to ask since you have had spotting for multiple weeks now just as I have. Do you have another kiddo at home? That has been my biggest challenge...my toddler is around 30 lbs and lifting him seems to make my spotting worse so I am trying to do so as little as possible. My best to everyone and I pray for our bleeds to heal! :)
  • I had my spotting start at 6 weeks and continued for about 4.5 (currently). Last week I called to ask my doc if I should still not be concerned about it and they sent me for an US and took me off work for a week to help the healing go faster. The SCH grew from 4-6mm to about 1.4 cm in 4 weeks. It is between the placenta and uterine wall which does make it more risky but the doctor didn't make it sound like it was all doom and gloom.

They also started me on progesterone 200mg twice a day. Which practically stopped the bleeding for me. They suspect that the bleed may have been getting bigger because my hormones were not able to keep up with the pregnancy. I know a few others have mentioned that also. Are any of you taking supplements?

Luckily i don't have any LOs at home to manage while I'm off work. Let me tell you about all the freaking paperwork my work sent me about this "medical leave" holy eff! I hope all the SCH heal quickly and we can focus on other things. I know this makes it really hard for me to think of the future because I'm afraid to get too excited. My doctor also said that it's normal that they resolve themselves by 20 weeks. Hopefully much soon though.

@blessednewmom1 the ER doc said to have one in a couple weeks, I have my NT scan on 11/14 so that timing should work out.
@CopperPoppy no supplements.  They did not mention needing any.

    GL to you ladies!

  • I think they only gave my supplements bc mine got bigger. I am having another US one week after my last. Not sure about how often after that.

  • @CopperPoppy...I am not on supplements but I am going to ask my doc about possibly starting them since my spotting has gone on for close to 6 weeks. And my SCH is larger than yours so they might help it heal faster. Your doc sounds very on top of things which is great!! I have been getting family help with my toddler, try not to stand too long, and also am on pelvic rest. I am always so bummed when the spotting starts again! My best to you all!! Prayers that the bleeds heal super fast and our little ones are safe!
  • I have SCH also. Unfortunately the sonographer didn't take measurements to compare to, so I have no idea if it's healing, but I'm not bleeding as much as I initially was. Just a heads up, I bleed after a difficult BM or after picking up my toddler, so don't be alarmed if you still see blood.

    FX it resolves quickly.

  • @CamrynnsMommy...my doc doesn't always measure mine either so I don't know if it's healing or not...which is kind of frustrating. Does your doc think it's ok to pick up your toddler? I know sometimes we have no choice! My doc said to "take it easy"...whatever that means! I am trying to get help with my toddler but that has been a challenge. I, too, notice my bleeding gets worse when I pick up my toddler, or lean over a lot. My best to you!
  • I'm glad to see others have this too! My dr found one at my 8 week u/s and I've been worried ever since. Next u/s is in 2 weeks. Glad yours ended up ok and hopefully everything continues to be positive!

  • I had one through the 7 week mark and unfortunately I spotted everyday for 3 weeks. Great news, it completely dissolved itself out and I have had no issues since. Unfortunately spotting is scary but stay positive! I learned through this that SCH is very common and most pregnancies go on with no issues. T&Ps your way.

  • I had the same thing!  The scariest thing ever!  The first time was just a bit of spotting, but then around 8-9 weeks I started bleeding a LOT at work!  It was awful!  I went straight to the OB and started bawling when I saw that heartbeat!  That doctor told me to just take it easy for a week, no sex, no heavy lifting, and that the risk of miscarriage was 10-15% until you got to 11 weeks.  I went back for follow up a week later and saw a different doctor, and he wasn't worried at all.  He said the risk of miscarriage was really low, and bleeding is common because there is so much blood flow down there.  So far so good here.  Good luck to you!  The whole thing is terrifying!

  • I just wanted to add that by pelvic rest and no sex that also means no orgasms. We kinda took them literally and thought they meant no penetration (obviously) but an orgasm can cause contractions of your uterus and irritate the bleed more. I learned that the hard way but the bleeding seems to have subsided again. So I'm less worried now. So much for the beloved first tri sex.

Also, I would like to point out that I thought the spotting check ins were necessary for this exact reason. This ish is stressful and I think it's helpful to have some answers now.

  • Mine was discovered at 5w6d with a mega bleed. I don't know what it was measured as at that time, but the u/s report said "prominent" which scared the crap out of me. At my follow-up u/s at 7w1d, it was measuring 1cmx2cm and classified as "small". After the initial bleed, it quickly tapered off and then stopped for a solid two weeks before starting up again. It just recently has stopped again. It's so freaking scary! I'm on the same "pelvic rest, no heavy lifting/ stretching/ pulling" until further notice, which sucks.

FX for you that yours resolves soon!

  • @blessednewmom1, I had an u/s after the initial discovery of spotting (I have very light spotting). After it continued for 2 weeks, I had another u/s about 10 days after the first that showed no change. I have my NT scan on Friday, so it worked out well that way. Depending on what that shows, we'll take it from there I suppose!

Hugs to all you ladies dealing with this!

My doc was mad that she didn't. He did say no lifting my toddler, but that's not easy for me. Good luck to you, hope you heal quickly.

  • I have one too - at least I had one at 9 weeks.  Our next appointment is on Friday so we'll see if it's resolved itself (I haven't had any bleeding).

However, my doctor really didn't seem too concerned.  He made a good point - today's ultrasounds are sensitive enough to pick these up, but years ago how many women had them and had no idea?  He said they're fairly common and just told me no heavy lifting.

They'll just keep an eye on it and I'd just take it easy.  FX that it goes away soon and you can relax :)
  • I had a horrible SCH with DS that cause period like bleeding/gushing. I was restricted and put on pelvic rest. Most will heal themselves and are more of an annoyance than anything.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I have a pretty large SCH that I have had since before week 6. Sooooo stressful! My doc said that going into 2nd tri my m/c risk is higher than norm at like 10-15% but that she feels it is stable and I should be ok. The bleeding is so scary though! I am so glad they said yours is "small"!!! Rest up, FX it is gone soon!

  • So grateful to see this post. I've had a SCH since week 7 when it was spotted at my first ultrasound. I've had no bleeding at all!!!! I've been on strict bed rest. I'm currently on my 6th week of bed rest. I've never been so nervous in my life. I have another 2 weeks to go until my next scan. Praying it's gone!!! I cannot relax at all. I know miscariage is low percentage but I can't help freaking out!!!!! Being off work 6 weeks and not getting payed a penny is also stressing me out. Good luck to you all xoxox
  • I had one and our resolved on its own pretty quickly.

  • Another SCH'er...I was diagnosed after a big bleed at 9 weeks, was monitored weekly and on pelvic rest and no exercise. Only spotted brown for 2 days after the initial bleed. I upped my water intake, ate a ton of kale and foods high in vitamin k as I read this helps with healing. I had my 12 week checkup a week ago and the doctor wasn't concerned at all and lifted restrictions. In many cases the outcome is more favorable than unfavorable... And these will sometimes stick around through the 2nd tri. There's a great support group on babycenter.com where a lot of people share their experiences if you're interested. Thoughs are with anyone who goes through this!
  • Lurking from June 13. I had a SCH that was diagnosed at 7 weeks. It was 6cm and resolved by 13 weeks. I bled off and on the entire time until it resolved. I now have a healthy boy. I was put on bed rest for a few days and then pelvic rest until it resolved. My Dr said there was nothing to worry about(easier said than done) unless we got into the second trimester with it. I had a sono every 2 weeks until it resolved.

  • @amberdt03....thanks so much for your insight!!! After your few days of bed rest, were you on lifting restrictions or anything? Caring for my toddler is proving difficult. I have had spotting for almost 6 weeks and am hoping all of our SCH heal soon!! Thanks for chiming in!!
  • @blessednewmom1 Yes, I was told no heavy lifting until it was clear. I'm sure that's very hard to do with a toddler! I hope everything clears up soon for all of you ladies so you can get back to enjoying your pregnancies!!

They found mine around 6 weeks at my dating u/s. I had no bleeding up until this past Friday when I started spotting. They've been keeping an eye on it weekly and the doctor said it had gotten smaller. He also said that the location it is in poses very little threat to the baby and not to stress. I'm on pelvic rest and will go back next week to be checked again. They told me they see this in 1 of 3 pregnancies, it's very common and in most cases the pregnancy and baby are fine. I too have a toddler and instead of picking him up I try to sit and have him sit in my lap when he wants me to hold him. DH has also been helping me a lot more and making sure to be home early from work and such so he can help with DS more.

  • Another SCHer here...they found mine at 7 weeks and I've had spotting/bleeding on and off since then. I will be 13 weeks tomorrow. On my last US last week it was measuring 2.5cm. I have another US on Thursday. I am really curious as to the explain action you girls received from your oBs as to what causes the SCH. Also I keep asking and my OB has not put any restrictions on me....he said I can even keep running (I'm not)/ sex/ lifting my 24 month old. It just doesn't seem right to me...curious as to what you girls were instructed.
  • @megwuf I have a SCH similar in size to yours and I have had spotting on and off for 6 weeks. I am almost 11 weeks pregnant. I think restrictions often vary from doctor to doctor. I also have a toddler. I am trying to avoid lifting him as much as possible, but sometimes I have no choice. I am also doing pelvic rest. My nurse practitioner mentioned these restrictions to me. My best to you and to all of the ladies on this thread. I hope all of the SCH heal soon !
  • @megwuf I forgot to add...my doc said to avoid exercise for me until it healed, but as I said before, these restrictions may vary from doc to doc.
  • @megwuf said:

From my doctor and reading about it, SCH are classified under "implantation bleeding". Although these usually are noticed far after implantation, they probably began when the embryo burrowed and tore a tiny hole that never fully healed and in some cases gets bigger. Hope that makes sense.

  • In the same boat here... SCH was found at 8 weeks in the ER after some bright red blood. I had spotting on and off until this pass Friday, then nothing till yesterday. Once again bright red blood and it hasn't stopped since, went to the dr and everything was good wih the baby (even saw it move and wave it's hand!) but I'm still freaking out. I was told to take it easy no excersing, no sex, no heavy lifting, and no being on my feet for too long.

Hope things works out for all of us SOON!
  • I had one of these bleeds during week 5 while I was on vacation in Punta Cana...talk about freaking out...everything is fine now but I was worried but haven't bled since and today at my 12 week appt we listened to a strong little heart beat. Dr is hopeful that at this stage we won't have any more issues
  • Just found out about mine today after finding blood in the sheets at 4:30 am. Soooo scary. I was relieved to see an active baby with a strong heartbeat. I'm 11 weeks Friday and my doc said nothing about being concerned about 2nd trimester. He said the placenta being above the SCH was a good thing and didn't mention a miscarriage risk. He did say that as the baby grows he puts pressure on the SCH and that causes bleeding. I happened to wake up on my belly when I felt the blood, so I'm sure that added to the pressure. Lesson learned- bright red blood is not always the end of a pregnancy.
