Picky eater help!!!

DS is a horrible eater. He won't try new things ever. If I try to mix something in with his trusted Mac and cheese he will wipe it off the middle or throw the noodle out. He will eat almost any fruit, Mac and cheese, and yogurt. Other than that it's hit or miss. He will most if the time eat avacado and pancake or toast. He only will eat puréed veggies. He seriously refuses all other food. Help me please! I think the pedi might refer us to a speech therapist to help with the eating at his 15 month and I want to do it on our own. I give him food to try, let him play with it, let him feed me, but nothing works.

He's also not drinking enough. He has about 16oz of milk in his bottle morning and night and other than that doesn't even finish one sippy of water or diluted juice. What's up with my kid? He's always been picky with food. It's making meal time so hard.

Re: Picky eater help!!!

  • Is he growing ok? Does he seem happy? I really don't think it's that unusual at this stage when kids realize that they have choice about what to eat, for them to only want to eat certain things. Does your son like cheese? What about some kind of mini sandwich on pita bread? Hard boiled eggs? Pb&j? My DD will also only eat puréed veggies - she throws pieces of cooked veggies on the ground - so I just try to get her a wide variety of fruit.

  • I was told by our pedi that 16oz is their required fluid intake. Is he having problems with b/m or urination? Those are always too good ways to tell if he is dehydrated.
    Are the doctors concerned about growth? Maybe you can try the toddler formula in place of a bottle of WCM to try and get DS the nutrients he needs?
    Hang in there! I vividly remember my sister only eating pbj sandwiches for MONTHS.

  • His growth is fine! Maybe this isn't as big a deal as I thought then??? It seems like I can't get him to eat anything of substance except Mac and cheese. He has been having constipation problems which has led us to really focus on drinking more. Plus the Mac and cheese prob doesn't help with that either:)
  • Yeah in talking to coworkers with kids it seems pretty common. I think if I were you I would focus on trying to increase his water/juice intake and not worry too much about the food, other than continually offering new stuff.

  • I would just keep offering, you can't make him eat! And maybe give him a multi vitamin. I think many toddlers go through a picky eating stage.

  • Have you tried Chicken Noodle soup?  Two weeks ago when we found out that H has 8 teeth coming in, his pedi said nothing but really soft foods. I tried the soup on a whim and he gobbled it right up. He eats it with a few crackers and absolutely loves it.

    I too am concerned about him not eating much but his doctor didn't seem all that concerned and said it is pretty common. She gave us a couple of samples of Pedisure, she said to try the food first and if he flat out refuses then give him one of the shakes. She said it's basically a meal replacement and it has all the fat and protein he needs. I ended up having to give him one and he sucked it down. You might try something like that if you are desperate. Just know that you are not alone!!

  • My daughter doesn't eat at all either! She eats the same thing pretty much everyday;
    Breakfast- oatmeal made with wcm and a banana mashed in or waffle and yogurt

    Lunch- pretty much Nutella and jelly is all she will eat, ocassionally a grilled cheese

    Dinner- picks at what we eat, usually throws it on the floor. I still give her puréed pouches that are fruit mixed with a veggie to get veggies in.

    Snacks are goldfish, animal crackers, yogurt, applesauce, blueberries or bananas

    She also only drinks 2-3 cups of milk a day. Our pedi said 3 is the max. I don't even offer her water or juice because she usually doesn't drink enough milk..
