We hardly did anything. We covered outlets, anchored furniture, and that's really it. It depends a lot on your baby, too. DS1 was never really into things like cabinets, etc. and with just one kid it was easy for us to keep an eye on him anyway.
We covered outlets. That's it. No gates- I taught the girls to do stairs around 11 months. I do want to anchor a few pieces of furniture. Neither have attempted climbing but I read a horror story so I need to order some furniture straps (bc lowes, Home Depot and BRU don't have them.)
I also just always opened the Tupperware cabinet so they play there and have never attempted other cupboards with pans, dishes, or cleaners.

I did the Tupperware cabinet for dd as well and she has never botjered any other cabinet. The biggest obstacle we had was teaching her to stay out of the cats water dish.
