Faster flow nipples?

The 10 things post made me think- when do you switch to faster flow nipples? My LO is 4 months and still using the ones that came with her bottles. Is it only if she starts to fuss while taking the bottle?

Re: Faster flow nipples?

  • I am curious about this also.  He takes 6-7oz per bottle at day care so he has moved on to larger medela bottles but because those came with medium flow nipples, I ended up having to purchase extra slow flow nipples to use with those bottles. I just figured I'd wait until daycare asks about medium flow nipples, but I am curious if I should be moving him up to medium at some point...

  • I will be following this. Any BTDT moms have any experience? I think my LO gets frustrated when she's eating sometimes. Although it is hard to tell if she's frustrated with the amount coming through, or that she's playing with the bottle too much which prohibits a steady flow.
  • Thanks, ladies. I will give it a try this weekend.
  • I just switched to the level 2 (med flow) about a week ago, he is 4 1/2 months.  He was starting to get really frusterated when he was eating and sucking so hard the nipple was collapsing.

  • With DS I switched according to the age recommendations on the Born Free nipples.  With DD, she is still sucking down bottles pretty quickly according to the nanny so I haven't changed them.  I did notice that she was fussy this weekend trying to take a bottle when we were out so I might try a faster flow to see if it was that or because I was around and not nursing her.
  • We switched a few weeks ago (he just turned 4 months). Honestly the daycare lady is the one who told us it was time to switch because he was getting frustrated/tiring himself out trying to get the milk out, and I just trusted her and made the change. I've never actually given him a bottle at this point so she's the one who would know!
  • I switched about 6 weeks ago to a 2 nipple. She was fussy at feeding and switching worked like a charm.
