My maiden name is long and German and I love it!!! Since DH has brothers and not much of a relationship with his biological dad, we decided to both use my last name. The government shutdown put the actual name change process on hold, but I'm really excited for our child to have my last name.
A big part of our decision was because my last name would have died out with my parents and I felt like it was such a shame to lose a name with so much history and I didn't want to lose my Germanic culture and traditions. So now the pressure is on me to have some baby boys to carry on the name
@Stace0616 - Glad to see another person who kept their last name as the family name, and who decided on the last name based on something logical . How great that your husband agreed. And maybe if you have daughters, they'll do the same thing!

I'm actually in the process of changing DD's last name to my last name. Her dad has been out of the picture for over 3 years. Going back to court today.
I kept my name for professional reasons, but also, in Iceland it doesn't matter. Families don't have the same last names because they have patronymic last names. Brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, all have different names. So, LO will never feel weird that mommy and daddy don't have the same last night. I am actually considering giving him or her a patronymic last name, since I'm taking my citizenship test in December. Not sure, though.
My husband's family always sends cards addressed to Mr. and Mrs. HisFirst HisLast and I want to throw things at the wall. Not only did I not take his name, which they know but can't comprehend, I still wouldn't be a Mrs. HisFirst HisLast. Grant me at least my first name, wouldya?
