Ladies on their 2nd+ go around...

Re: Ladies on their 2nd+ go around...

  • My first two were both girls, exactly 2yrs apart. I didn't have a second shower and didn't really need one. That said, I could fill a registry for sure with crap that I need doubles of for these twins, so I'd happily accept a shower now. lol

  • I think it's completely up to you if you have another shower.  I know a lot of people who did and a lot of people who didn't for their second.  I am choosing to NOT have a second one even if someone wants to throw it for me, for the simple fact that my sister is due around the same time with twins and they are her first, I don't want any of the spotlight to be taken off of her.  Also, DS is only 3, so we have everything that we need already.  If my sis, cousins and girlfriends want to get together and go to lunch or something like that just to celebrate LO #2, that would be awesome.

But, for everyone who says that the baby shower is to welcome the mom to motherhood and thus the mom should not have more than one shower, I checked and can't find anywhere that that is what the purposed is... From Wikipedia:  In some countries, a baby shower is a way to celebrate the pending or recent birth of a child by presenting gifts to the parents at a party.  There are dozens of other sites, that note that baby showers are to celebrate the impending birth of a baby and gifts are given to help ease the financial burden for the parents.  If you research the history of baby showers, they used to be held about a month after the baby was born, but in post WWII America, they began to take the shape of what we recognize today as a baby shower.  To celebrate the occasion of bringing a child into the world.  Baby shower gifts, were to help the parents better prepare for the baby's arrival and the months that followed.

So I say to whomever is thrown a second shower, enjoy it!   Don't worry about what strangers on the internet think about it.  If it is socially accteptable to you and your loved ones, go for it!

  • I didn't have one the first time and I doubt I'll have one this time even though it's been 7 years since my son was born. In all honesty, I just don't have enough female friends or family members for a shower to be feasible. I didn't have a bridal shower or bachelorette party for the same reason.

  • I'm not planning on it figure if someone wants to buy baby gift they will
  • I personally think they are a bit tacky unless there is a large gap between children. We had twins 2nd time around and friends offered to throw a sprinkle, I declined.

  • We won't do another shower, but have thought about a gender-reveal party.  I know, I know, lots of people think they're lame and overrated, but it won't be for us to find out, just something small to announce to the family most likely.   We'll do our own personal gender reveal and then plan something fun and small for the rest of the family.

  • I love this thread and all these "rules" that people get so worked up over.
If you want a shower for baby #2, or #3 or whatever, and someone wants to host it for you - then do it. The reality is that people will buy you gifts whether you have a shower or not. And parties are fun! Who says showers are to welcome you into motherhood - where is that written? It is whatever you want it to be. If you don't feel comfortable with showers after your first baby, then don't do it. But, this is something that always comes up and there are always super judgey people about it. To each their own!
