Emma: still too overused/trendy/popular to use?

Or is it one of those classic names that never goes out of style?

For what it's worth, I don't knowANY kids IRL with the name Emma....Thoughts?

Other names we're considering from my post yesterday- Anna, Ava, Emily, Chloe.

Sib is Mia.

Re: Emma: still too overused/trendy/popular to use?

  • IMO yes, Emma is too popular - too popular not only for Emma but all the Em- variants out there. I would not want my child to be Emma in a sea of Emmy's NN'd off all these Em- names

But that's just me - if you really love it, go for it

  • I don't think it's too  "trendy", but it's definitely popular.  It's been in the top 10 for years now. If you love it use it though.
  • I honesly can not be an advocate for one single more Emma.

It's a beautiful name, and I am saying this in jest but ENOUGH ALREADY.

Mia and Ava are gorgeous together.  I also know a Cara and Mia sibset (Caramia-- a little cheesy, I know) and a Mia and Lilly sibset.

  • Just for reference, I asked DD how many Emmas she knows: zero.  Her grade has 2 Emily's and an Emmeline, but no Emmas.

DS has one Emma in his grade.

I don't think anyone would ever give an eyeroll to a popular but classic name like Emma.  I think people react negatively to flash-in-the-pan naming trends like the "McKenzie, Kenzie, Makenna" thing or the "Aiden/Jaden/Caden/Brayden" disaster.

I think your DD is a bit older than the start of the Emma craze curve.  Your DS is at the beginning of it.

I don't know a lot of kids/ babies personally, and I can think of 3 in my FB feed born in the last year.

    Again, that is all anecdotal.

What's not anecdotal is that the name has been top 10 for 10 years and it shows no signs of slowing down.

That's a crap ton of Emmas.

  • If I am ever considering a name that is popular, I always look up the number of children born with said name the most recent year, compared to the same number of children born with that name in the year I was born...Does that make sense? Silly I know, but to my mind, that gives me an idea of how many theoretically would be around.

For example with Emma- There were 20,791 Emmas born in 2012.  In 1986, the name with the equivalent number of births was Brittany.  I know several Brittanys, but not nearly as many as Jessicas (52,567!)  So for me, Emma is usable.  Will she have other Emmas in her class, very very likely, but she is unlikely to have 4 other Emma's in her class.

Long winded response to say this- I think Emma is lovely, and if it is the name you all love, use it!

    This.
    I prefer Emily to Emma.
  • We debated on Emma and Emily as well, but I couldn't get over how popular they were.  Maybe look up your particular state to see if they still rank as high?  They are beautiful names, but I feel when there are so many with that name (like Ava) it loses some of it's, "wow, what a beautiful name."  For example, if I sit and think about it, I realize how pretty the name Lilly is, but when I hear it, I think "oh, another one!"

That's why we decided on Anna.  Same kind of name...classic, beautiful, ages well, (NOT boring, haha) but also not in the top 10

  • It is popular but it's classic. I would use it if you love it.
  • I have always loved this name.  I think it is a classic.  I don't know anyone with this name.

  • Look at that website that ranks names based on all spellings. Since you really can't butcher Emma too badly, it drops down the list a bit in popularity (still top 25 though). Sofia/Sophia and all the McKensie spellings boost those names way up. I'm an Emily and I was the only Emily in my grade but there was at least 1-2 in every other grade so it wasn't bad. I'm at the age where everyone is just starting to have babies and I haven't heard of any Emma's. I know 4 Addison/Addysons, a lot of "Mc"and "ley" names etc. so if you're going to pick a popular name, you're at least picking a beautifully classic one.
  • I think so. Maybe it's regional, but I know a lot of Emma's.
