High-Risk Pregnancy

experience with HBP during pregnancy?

Hi all! I lurked earlier this year when I was diagnosed with both GD and hypertension, then induced for Pre-E during my pregnancy with DD (who is now 6 months). (((hugs))) to those who are on bed rest/dealing with high risk issues.

It looks like, though I never had HBP before pregnancy, I now have chronic HBP and am on daily medication.

DH and I hope to start TTC #2 after the holidays. I am familiar with dealing with HBP/Pre-E in very late pregnancy (I was dx at 36 weeks) but have no experience with HBP during early pregnancy.

What sort of meds/protocol did your OB prescribe in first tri for HBP? Will I continue on the same meds as I am on now (Labetelol, which is ok for breastfeeding but now sure about pregnancy)? Also, I understand I will be considered high risk, so should I assume to be induced early for future pregnancies (I was induced at 37 weeks with DD).

Any stories/info is greatly appreciated. TIA!

I've been taking labetelol my whole pregnancy ( I'm almost 28 weeks). I had no special protocols my first trimester. Just my monthly appointments. They are having me do a 24 hour urine collection now just in case my bp spikes as the pregnancy keeps going. That way if it does I'll do another 24 hour collection to help them decide if its chronic hypertension vs pre-e. My blood pressures run 110-115 over 65-75 on medication. He said I'll start non stress tests week 32 but I didn't ask how often they'll be done. I'm glad my office is thorough but I really have had no issues thus far, and hope to keep it that way. Hope that helps.

  • I'm on Lopressor, my doc said it was the safest beta blocker for pregnancy.  Can't speak to how effective it is, my blood pressure is all over the place :(

  • I have been on labetelol, knowing we were TTC. My family has major BP issues, so it's not unexpected. I did some extra blood work and a 24 hour urine early on so we have something to compare later, if needed. I also check my BP at home daily (almost) and keep a record for my ob. My BP is ALWAYS high in the doctors office. Especially in my ob's office for some reason. No one touches me with a BP cuff until the end of my appt so it doesn't freak me out more. We don't use the electronic monitor in the office and make sure to have the right cuff. Since we have been doing that, it has been in the acceptable range even at the ob's office.

I track at home because they care more about that than they do the times I'm in the office (since they know I stress and run high). Since I run normal at home, they are ok with all my numbers and current plan. But, they do watch me closely.
  • I was on Labetalol prior to LO #1 and was on it throughout my pregnancy.  I had my dosage increased 3 times.  Around 32 weeks I started NSTs twice a week and had ultrasounds every other appt.  I was considered high risk but didn't need to go to MFM.  I had to do a 24 hour urine catch along the way too.  I was induced at 39 weeks.  My OB felt by BP was controlled on the meds so there was no need to induce earlier.
