Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How old was LO when sitting on own?

I know babies all develop at different rates. I'm just curious to know how old your LOs were when they could sit up completely on their own? Did you do anything special to help teach them or did they do it on their own?

My LO isn't sitting up completely yet. I sit on the floor with her for a bit every day, put her between my legs. She can sit unassisted for about a minute, then will fall over when reaching for a toy. She's a big girl at 20 lbs, 28.5 in. I wonder if her size makes it more difficult for her?

  • Try playing row row row your boat with her several times a day. You see-saw back and forth while you sing and it helps build core strength. Mine sat at 5 months but she decided she likes sitting so much that she's not bothering to try and crawl or anything... Oh well. She'll get there eventually and yours will too!

  • Our little guy sat for awhile by himself by 6 months, but would tip over at the drop of a hat. He's now 9 months and can sit up all by himself and easily transition down to his belly without our assistance. The only training we did was to sit him in between our legs. I'm sure she'll get it when she's ready. :)
  • Our daughter sat up 1 day before she turned 5 months.  She skipped rolling over and went straight to sitting.  We didn't do anything special.  We just sat with her in between our legs to help her practice and did a lot of "sit-ups" and the "row row row your boat" thing already mentioned.
  • He could tripod around 4.5 months and sit around 5, though it was closer to 5.5 when he could do it pretty reliably/without falling. He still can't actually get himself into the sitting position. He is a smaller baby, and I do think smaller kids tend to do those sorts of things a little earlier. We didn't really do much to encourage it other than just sort of putting/holding him in the sitting position while doing things, or sometimes just using the boppy for support.
  • My daughter was around 5.5 months. She sat really good on her own around 6 months without falling over after a few minutes. She is 8 months now and can get into a sitting position from her tummy. We did lots of tummy time. She goes to daycare during the week and they do lots of tummy time with her there as well.
  • He started sitting on his own at 7 months. He still loses balance when reaching for a toy and topples over.

My guy got it down at about 6 months. He also slipped rolling over, but is a great sitter...he uses his body to balance when he starts to list and steadies himself reflexively. He (at 7 mos) is now into rocking himself vigorously back and forth...he wants to move so bad, but doesn't know how!

  • Ours was 5 months...the pedi told us when she is sitting on us or on the floor to just help her support herself by holding her hands and after she strengthened her core muscles from that just hold her legs for support and it seemed to help. She is 7.5 months now and crawling and pulling up on everything.

  • DD just started sitting up reliably shortly after 8 months. She did the tripod probably around 6 months, and could kind of sit unassisted around 7 months, but I couldn't trust her. She would topple over easily and I had to make sure she was on carpet or had pillows surrounding her. Now she can get into a sitting position herself and will sit steadily on her own for quite awhile.

  • My LO could sit completely unassisted for long periods of time, play with toys etc right at 6 months. Now a couple weeks later he can go down to his tummy and back to sitting again and is just starting to get forward motion crawling.
  • DD didn't sit unassisted until after she learned to crawl. Now she pushes herself up to sit from crawling and sits great in general. She has diatisis recti and I wasn't holding my breath waiting for her to sit. I kept encouraging her but not pushing. We did the row your boat idea once or twice. She was 100% sitting at about 6.5 months.

  • My daughter is 7months 1week and has been sitting unsupported for just over a month.  For the last 2 weeks she can sit for over 30 min, reach in all direction and correct to remain seated.  She can reach all the way forward (so she is flat between her legs) and get herself back up.  For the first few weeks she stayed up for shorter periods and would randomly flop over when reaching so we used some pillows to catch her head (not touching her but head length away).

The day she started sitting she completely stopped rolling (previously rolled both ways).  She can hold herself up in a crawl position when placed but just rocks a bit before lying down.  She can army crawl around reaching toys but isn't mobile.

  • My daughter 6 months and almost 2 weeks and she has been sitting unassisted for short periods of time for about 3-4 weeks. At times she still topples over but not so much.
  • 6 months exactly.  DD does the most adorable thing to get herself into sitting position: from crawling position (hands and knees) she gets on her toes so her body forms an upside down V then rocks her bum to one side and pushes off her hands to be sitting up.  It's so cute to watch!!  I've been sitting her up since 4 months, usually with pillows or soft blankets around her so if she leaned to far and fell over she wouldn't hurt herself.  She taught herself to sit up once she started crawling.  She now prefers to be sitting up, not laying down, if she's awake.

  • DD1 was 6 months (18.5 lbs, 29"). DD2 was 5 months (approx 17 lbs & 27"). DD3 was really close at 6 months. She can sit for quite a while before she tips, but I wouldn't leave her without a pillow behind her just yet. (She was 14.5 lbs and 27.5" at 6 months.)

  • Our son started sitting unassisted at 5 months, we didn't do anything to teach him he just started to do it on his own
  • I think around 5 months she could sit unassisted for fairly long periods of time....

  • 5 months. I used to put her in between my legs and boppy pillow. It took a few weeks before she didn't lose balance.
  • DS1 at 6 months and DS2 at 5 months.
