Placenta accreta?. Not sure...

I just had my a/s and found out we are having another beautiful girl! Unfortunately they were concerned about the placenta. It is growing the baby fine, but they said it looked muscle-y and vein-y (they had better word choice, but that's all I remember) and it wasn't what they like to see. It looks like it is attaching to my uterus which they said would result in a hysterectomy, or, she said it could be something that will resolve itself. I have to go back in 4 weeks to evaluate again and see what is really going on.

Of course, I did the worst thing possible and Googled. It looks like this would be (or be similar to, obviously I'm no doctor) placenta accreta. I'm just terrified and don't know what to think. Is anyone else going through this?

Re: Placenta accreta?. Not sure...

  • I had placenta accreta with my twins, but it wasn't diagnosed until delivery.  My OB removed it manually (I DO NOT recommend this AT ALL) and I hemorrhaged from that.  Three weeks later I had a big hemorrhage at home, and had to have an emergency D&C to remove a piece of placenta that was left behind.  Thankfully, I didn't need the hysterectomy, but I came verrrrrry close.  I believe you can opt for a C-section so they can try to save your fertility, but it still may end up resulting in a hysterectomy if they're not able to remove the placenta in full.

If you do end up having accreta, ask tons of questions about your options.  If they really feel a hysterectomy is the best option for you, I would say do it.  Yes, it sucks, but your baby needs you to be his/her mom.  Good luck!!
