Anyone tried soy milk?

I went in for DS's one year appointment. He was sick at one year so it was a month overdue. I have still been giving him special formula because he can't take milk due to a milk protein allergy. I did not have my regular pedi. She acted like formula for a toddler was bad and said I need to give him soy milk. However, I distinctly remember my original pedi saying that if a baby had a mpi to milk products they most likely would have an intolerance to soy because I asked about soy formula at the time we put him on alimentum. Any experience?

Edit: I have tried cows milk and he still has problems.

Re: Anyone tried soy milk?

  • I have heard that milk and soy protein intolerance is related. Does your lo have an allergy or intolerance? I have heard that intolerance is often grown out of and milk and soy drinking is ok.

  • No personal experience, but my pedi told us 50% of children with a milk intolerance also have a soy intolerance. When DS2 had some blood in his stool and spit up, she was planning to have us switch to soy formula before the real mspi formula (cost and testing for soy intolerance being her reasoning behind that plan). It turned out to be blood from nursing, so we didn't end up doing it.

  • I agree with cinciem. I've heard most babies can switch to regular milk products at a year. I would discuss it with your regular pedi.
  • DS was MSPI as a baby but now seems more to just be MPI. Our pedi suggested that we give LO enriched rice milk as he failed with cheese and yogurt. Even though he seems to be tolerant of soy as an ingredient, our pedi suggested we not try soy milk. Have you tried introducing dairy at all to LO?

  • I tried cow's milk and he got horrible diarrhea and all the other symptoms he had with the regular formula. Plus, I can't drink milk either. I am fine with cheese and even ice cream, but straight milk has me running to the bathroom.

  • Iback, if you've tried reintroducing that much and he can't take it then I'd give soy a try knowing you might get the same result, but he might be one of the kids that is fine with soy but not cows milk. That way you could at least go back to your pedi with the info from trying everything and see what they recommend from there.
