Moms of 2+

edited October 2013 in September 2013 Moms
My DH works nights. Since DS was born he has come home between jobs to help until our two year old is in bed. This stops next week and I will need to feed, bathe, read a story, and put my DD to bed while caring for DS as well. Just thinking about it feels like a circus act. How do you other moms fit your newLY into your bedtime routine? And how do you manage when you have to bathe bath?

  • I'm on #3. Usually, I do have dh to help, but the few times I haven't, I've been doing alot of it one handed! I've also been working with my older two (3.5 and 2.5) to do things themselves, even if its weird. Example: I can't always put water in their sippies because I'm nursing. So, I've taught them to open their sippies, turn the bathtub on and turn it to cold, and fill their sippies. They also now wash their hands and faces from the bathtub faucet. It's weird, but it works!

I also have a basket in the pantry that is their level full of granola bars, fruit snacks, cheese and crackers etc that they can go get themselves of I can't.

Even if your dd can't do her whole bedtime routine by herself, she can do some. Go get her own book, snack etc.

  • She gets a bath during the day when he goes to grandma's. I get him ready for bed, put on sprout, feed her, pump and then snuggle him to sleep.

I have the same thing in our pantry.

When ds1 had just turned 2 and ds2 was 8 weeks old DH deployed for 7 months so i always did bedtime alone. Teach your oldest to do somethings on her own, get used to doing it one handed, keep a bouncer in the bathroom or put baby in a carrier (I'm a big Moby fan.) Plan ahead so jammies are laid out, sippy is ready in the fridge, etc to make it easier on yourself . Some nights will be harder then others. Some nights you might have to skip bath time because all baby will give you time for is reading and cuddling. You'll find a grove, good luck!

  • I bathe the older one first and then get him to help me bathe her. Then when she is dressed I put her in her crib with her mobile on and go read stories with son. I usually get about 7 minutes before she starts screaming so stories are sometimes quicker than normal.
  • I bring the bouncer chair into the bathroom to put dd#2 in it whle I bathe, dress, brush hair and teeth with dd#1. Then I feed dd#2 while dd#1 gets daddy time and then we get dd#1 in bed. I usually read our bedtime story while holding dd#2 and cuddling dd#1.
