Hey there. I am sorry to sound so ignorant but was curious!
I started my first round of Clomid (50 mcg) on 9/21. Tomorrow, day 13, I am going in for an ultrasound to see if I'm ovulating? And then if things look good, being sent over to my OB's office for a shot? Does this shot hurt?
I should have asked for more detail... but I have no idea what's about to happen. What if things don't look good tomorrow? Do you have to go back? Or do you just start trying from there?
If I'm on day 12 NOW... should DH and I be BD'ing right now? Or would that be bad to do the night before the ultrasound?
I'm a little embarrassed to say that I'm confused! Any advice/help/explanation is appreciated ![]()
Re: What to expect? Ultrasound tomorrow morning...
Don't be sorry, we have all been new at one time or another. At least your OB is going some monitoring. IMO though- I would seek a referral to an RE after this round. They will be able to give you more direction, etc. OB's tend to think that Clomid is a magic drug and "most" of them have little experience with it. You also can max out on rounds of Clomid, FDA only allows so many, so you don't want to waste them.
Your ultrasound will just tell them where your follicles are at. Depending on how they look, a couple things can happen.
1) You might have to go in a couple days in a row to watch them
2) Sounds like they would give you a trigger shot then
3) My RE told me when to trigger, about 24 hours after my u/s
Again, IMO, if you are planning on Timed Intercourse, I would not have sex tonight, since you will need his sperm count at it's best if you are having sex tomorrow. (My RE had us have sex 2 days in a row after our trigger)
Shot does not hurt at all, but you probably will get that response from most of us who are giving ourselves 2-4 injections per day with IVF cycles. Needles don;t scare me. It's just a sub q shot (most likely) so no big deal.
I hope some of that helped.

This is so great! Thank you!!!
Okay, we'll wait on the BD'ing!
So there's timed intercourse? DH hates that stuff... guess he'll have to deal!
Sorry again... what is an RE? I have only been to my OB... that's interesting to know about OB's and Clomid! My boss is the one who referred me to the OB I have now - she conceived both of her children with Clomid... 5 rounds with one, 3 with the other... he never had her do a trigger shot but is having me do one?
I had no idea you go back if you don't see what they're looking for. My boss (different boss than the one above... that one works elsewhere now) won't be happy with that one! Dang. We'll work it out if that has to happen!
But all my OB said is that I would go to his office for the shot. I guess they'll literally give it to me to take home then? I guess you BD within a certain time range of the shot then?
And do you give the shot to yourself?! My husband would have to give it to me... lol I'm quite the wimp
Thank you again!!!!
I wish I had better answers for you, it really is going to vary on each Dr's protocol. An RE is a Reprodcutive Endocrinologist, fertility specialist. Not to knock OB's, but they do not have training to deal with these things. Most OB's won't even monitor their patients on Clomid, which is VERY dangerous.
I believe (someone please jump in if I am wrong) that Clomid is limited to 6 cycles by the FDA. If your OB is handing out 8 rounds to your friend, I would RUN. That is my honest opinion. It's a serious drug, not one to play around with.
If your OB does your shot, then you may have nothing to worry about.
Here is a breakdown of how my treatments went (again, they vary by Dr, so be sure to ask your Dr a lot of questions)
After preliminary bloodwork and baseline ultrasound, we started a cycle.
Clomid for 5 days, the we had u/s on CD 7 (I think...sorry, it's been a while)
I am a poor responder, so I ended up going in CD9 and CD10 for u/s to see my progress. Then I triggered with an HCG shot I think CD 12. We then has sex, or Timed Intercourse on CD 13, 14.
If you are doing the actual IUI process, you would go in after trigger for insemination.

This is all great info! Thank you so much for helping me!
We are not to the IUI process yet.... DH is one of those who already feels like this is "trying to hard"... so I have a feeling if the clomid & trigger shot combo doesn't work after a year or so (we have been trying on our own for 2 yrs), it may be it
But I'm not going to go there just yet!
Off to my ultrasound. Thanks again!
