We have used sleep sacks since G was wee. He's now 2, and we still use them. He does not like the toddler ones because they have foot holes and he likes his feet covered by the sack (remember is said he's quirky) and socks are not a sufficient "cover". As a result I'm squeezing him into smaller sacks or trying to cover his feet with the leg openings of the toddler sacks when we put him in bed. It is getting silly. So, I am considering just biting the bullet and doing away with the sleep sack and trying to get him to use a blanket over him big-boy style instead. Past attempts to incorporate a blanket in addition to the sleep sack have been a bust (he moves too much, and ends up sleeping on it rather than under it).
As we have an older home, it is drafty in winter so he will need something...has anyone had to actually work to transition a toddler out of a sleep sack, and if so, how did you do it? (And p.s. I hate the idea of losing the sleep sacks as they inhibit his ability to lift his leg and crawl out of his crib. Color me a bad mommy if that is so wrong.)

We didn't really do much to transition her. I just got rid of the sleep sack one day and put a blanket on her. It didn't stay on long so I took it away and let her fall asleep without it, then put it on her before I went to bed. It has been a few weeks and half the time, I still just wait until she falls asleep before putting it on and the other half, she falls asleep with it on.
Our new place gets much colder and we also started putting her in two piece pj's (the one piece button up ones without the feet were just getting ridiculously small on her) and she thinks the footed ones are the worse things invented. I could not find larger sleep sacks (we used the Halo ones) that did not have the foot holes. I think it could work if you got a 5T one and just sewed the holes together.
