Talk to me about Mirena

When we TTC for Owen and I stopped BC I felt so much better being off the hormones that I decided to never go back on them. But I'd still like some protection other than condoms. My doctor recently told me that Mirena is magic and has no side effects. I'm thinking about getting it at my annual in a week but I'm scared of weight gain and the rare perforated uterus. What's been your experience? Do you loooove it?

Re: Talk to me about Mirena

  • I love, loved it!  I had no period no bloating, no weight gain, no cray hormones or anything.  I felt a million times better than I did on the pill.  The only downside was after getting it in I bled for like 2 weeks off and on.  Getting it in and out was a cinch, no pain, just some period-like cramping.  I plan to get it again next spring after kid 2.

  • Also, the reason I chose it was that my OB also used it and I trust her very much so I felt comfortable getting it.

  • 1. I'm offended you did not Facebook chat me about this.
2.I love it. I haven't had any weight gain and to my knowledge my ute has no holes. Some goopy discharge grossness but no big deal! I know there are other side effects people say they've experienced but I also have not encountered those.

  • I have a friend who was on it for 10 years that had horrible problems after coming off.  The hormonal changes mimicked pregnancy and because of the horrible pain in her breasts, she had to have a mammogram.  Of course, that's 10 years of constant use.  She said she always loved it prior to that- no period and she didn't have the reaction to it that she did the pills she had tried.

  • I have it. The convenience factor is worth it. Some days I can barely remember my name, nevermind a bcp. I still get a period, but its only a day or two and random spotting the rest of the week. I definitely feel more "normal" on mirena than on the pill. I had mine placed at like 8 weeks pp, I didn't notice too much cramping, but I would recommend taking some advil before your appointment. And as Nikki#s suggested, let your Dr know you want it, and double check insurance, sometimes there is a wired charge for having it placed.

  • I don't have one, but a friend did. She got pg while on it. Ended up being a tubal pregnancy because of the mirena. She lost the baby and her tube. Sadly, she wasn't the only person I know of that this has happened to.

Prior to that happening she loved it.

  • @bubbajug I was waiting to discuss this over cocktails but I haven't seen you in forever! Was the goopy discharge just at the beginning or longer?

@nikki2223583 Thanks for the heads up. I'll call ahead to set things up in case I decide to take the Mirena plunge.

Thanks all for your input! I still can't make up my mind but this gives me things to think about and look into.

  • I had it put in 8 weeks PP. Honestly, I hated it. I bled for 2 months straight and then on and off for a few weeks after. It broke me out very badly, I was super emotional and cramped all of the damn time. I had it removed and felt soooo much better. It didn't work for me, but it could be awesome for you.
