Waking up 30-40 min after falling asleep

DS2 has always fallen asleep on his own and still does. I nurse him, he gets drowsy, is awake when I put him in his crib, I give him his paci and he goes to sleep. Lately he has been waking up 30-40 min after falling asleep and it takes about another 30 minutes of shooshing and paci popping to get him back to sleep. If I feed him he'll go back to sleep but I don't think he's hungry, he is just soothed by nursing. Anyone else going through this? I'm at a loss.

Yes. We have it from time to time. Honestly, I just left him alone to self-soothe finally. We were doing the paci game way too much and I knew it couldn't be a good habit. So I just let him fuss. And he found his thumb. Now he may wake and fuss for about 5 min and then sucks the thumb and goes back to sleep. It's actually worse if I go in the room, because then he wants to nurse to sleep so cries longer and harder rather than just fussing.
Can you send your husband in? He may be able to do a quick reassurance and leave, since LO knows he can't nurse with daddy. This wasn't an option for me as DH is at work most days at bedtime so I had to let him fuss it out. He's doing much better now. I'm very glad we did it.

  • is he waking because his paci is falling out?  If so wait 15 minutes after he falls asleep and gently pull it out before it falls out.

I tried sending DH in. Didn't work. I just went up to feed him and he blatantly refused eating, so I tried unswaddling him. He's now chewing on his hands and throwing his feet in the air. Maybe he didn't want to be swaddled anymore... or maybe he now thinks it's play time. Ugh!

No, it always falls out about 5 min after he falls asleep and he rarely wakes up later in the night for it, so I don't think it's a paci issue.

  • Yes, it started the past week. Once I nurse her she drops back off. I just think she must be a tiny bit hungry in my case.

  • LO has been doing this. He's 20 weeks. I think it's the mobility. Now that he can roll he does it constantly which wakes him up ( and then me of course). I'm hoping this will lessen and is just the 4mo sleep regression.

Could be. This week we took LO out of his Baby Merlin Sleep suit and put him in just a halo sleep sack. He is sooo much happier that he has more movement, and has slept better because of it.

Well he didn't want freedom. After 20 min of playing he started screaming bloody murder again, so I tried feeding him and he ate for 5 min then went to sleep on his own. Thinking maybe he is overtired so I will try bedtime a little earlier tonight. Always something with these little ones!

Isn't it though? So much trial and error. And as soon as we figure something out, they change. Earlier bedtime may help. The one book I read really pushes early bedtime. :-/ good luck!
