Transitioning from RNP to crib-any success stories?

We've been trying to transition our LO from the Rock n play to the crib for the past 3 days with little success.  We even have a magic sleepsuit that we put him in.  This worked great for my first son, so I had high hopes with our new baby, but no such luck.  He is waking every 1-2 hours all night!   Any advice for those who may have made this transition?  He no longer wants to be swaddled and is getting too big for the rock n play.  He likes the sleepsuit, but just cant stay asleep!

Re: Transitioning from RNP to crib-any success stories?

  • Did you have the RNP in the crib? The new size of the space can be overwhelming. We had our bouncer seat in the crib for a few weeks and she slept in that. We then transitioned her - still swaddled - on to a boppy lounger (the solid pillow). We were then able to get her out of the swaddle and eventually had her sleeping in the crib.

How old is LO? That may have something to do with the waking too!

  • Maybe I'm misunderstanding PP's post, but I would not put the RNP in the crib. That sounds very dangerous. Unfortunately, OP, I don't have any advice for you. DD will nap in the crib for an hour and a half if I get her in there without her waking up. But she wakes up every time I try to sneak her in there at night! She naps really well in a pack and play at daycare. I'm having DH ask our provider today what she does to get her in there.

You can also try other options than the sleep suit. Different babies like different things. I just ordered a Zipadee Zip based on some recommendations here because DD is breaking out of every swaddle (even the escape-proof one), but I have concerns about hip dysplasia with the sleep suit.

  • We are having the exact same problem.  DD1 slept perfectly swaddled in the crib from the time we moved her in there at 2 weeks old.  DD2 has reflux and sleeps so much better inclined in the RnP.  I'm considering using a wedge, but I just don't think it's a good long term solution since she's getting so close to rolling over.  We also have her in the sleep suit, but I may try a Halo sleep sack next time I try her in the crib.

I don't have much advice, but good luck!

  • I transitioned my first baby from the RNP to the bassinet (I think this was between three and four months old, and she still just barely fit in the bassinet), then from the bassinet to the crib.  It went so smoothly that I wasn't worried about it at all with my second, and we got rid of the bassinet, but DD 2 is almost 4 months old now and just will not sleep in the pack n play for very long (we just moved and it's been crazy so we don't have a crib for her yet).  I've tried naptime and bedtime with no success so far.  She still fits fine in the RnP...I just feel like the longer I wait to get her used to sleeping flat, the harder it will be.

Since the pack n play, unlike a crib mattress, is on the floor, I think I will try PP's suggestion of putting it inside the pack n play to see if that helps her.

  • We transitioned from RnP to PnP and it was rough at first but after about a week she was fine. We definitely had nights where she was up a lot! I did elevate one side of the PnP and that helped.

  • Ur was very hard..I didn't think I would ever get her out of it but I started her in crib and when she woke up I put her in rnp for the night..eventually she started sleeping longer and longer in crib..some nights were rough so I put her in bed with me until she was sleeping so it was flat like crib then put her in crib..between the two she is now in her crib and wakes 1x to eat around 3 or 4
  • I've been dealing with this too for almost a week. My LO was maybe waking once during the night in the rNp in the crib every 1- 2 hours! I've never felt more sleep deprived then I do now. Praying this passes GL ladies.
  • My guy has been in a RNP since birth he is now 4 months, I decided that last night would be the first night in the crib, so over the past few weeks I've been having him nap in the crib, I took two receiving blankets and rolled them up then made an egg shape under the sheet then took a very soft fuzzy blanket and stretched it over that and tucked it under the mattress so it's not loose, I also have had him sleep in his pjs with a sleep sack on ( started doing that a few weeks ago), I have worked to make the crib as close to the RNP as possible. I put him in his crib last night and he slept all night (8 to 6am) like he has been for the last month. I agree with having more room because if I put him in his crib to nap at first he would wake up shortly after, I noticed that him putting his arms out was waking him up, so I made the blankets to where his arms would touch those since that would happen in the RNP. Just be consistent and change one thing at a time so you learn what works and what doesn't,
  • We went from the RNP to a large bassinet at 3 months and that went very smooth. Now we need to go from bassinet to crib and she is 6 months on sunday. Not looking forward to that transition!
  • I wish I had a success story to share that doesn't include the magic sleep suit but I don't.  We tried for two nites without it and he woke up every 1/2 hour to 1 hour. After using the suit he's been in the crib doing 10hr stretches and only in RNP for very quick naps. Tried to get him out of the suit and into a sleep bag with no luck two nights ago.

  • a little before 6 weeks we moved her RNP into her room. Halfway through the night when she'd wake up to feed and then I'd put her in her crib. We did this for a couple weeks and then put her straight into her crib instead of moving her halfway through the night. it seemed to work perfect for us!
  • We started out with our daughter in the RNP in our room, but she was such a noisy sleeper we moved her to her bedroom in the RNP.  Once she started breaking out of her swaddle, we struggled with that for a bit because she wanted her arms free, but kept hitting herself and waking up.  So I tried the Woombie (she was able to move her arms, but not hit herself) and kept her in that in her RNP.  I was too afraid to swaddle her in the crib because she could roll.  Once she started trying to break out of that, I switched to the Halo sleep sac to do the one armed swaddle, eventually moving to no swaddle, did a couple naps with the arms out swaddle in the crib, and soon after, started nights in the crib.
  • No grand advice here. But you're not alone. We are having the exact same problem with DD. She's almost 4 months. In the RNP she was waking up once or twice at night. Now in the crib, she's waking every hour or two. Wish I had the magic answer, but we've been battling this for over a month. Hopefully it won't last this long for you!

Over a month? God help us! I'm starting the transition next week when he is exactly 4 mths. Trying to enjoy one last week of STTN.

  • Dd is 5 months and I'm keeping her in it till 6 months. Why? Because that's when I feel ok to do CIO. I'll do naps in the crib for a week then start bedtime. Not looking forward to it. I won't do CIO straight at first but can let her cry a little more. Ugh

  • We are at 3 months and trying to transition as well. DS seems to be getting uncomfortable in the RnP, he stretches a lot. I found that when laying him flat in his crib or PnP I need to hold his arms and hands down on his chest for a couple of minutes until he adjusts to the flat surface. If not, he will thrash around and hit himself in the head. Like most babies, he loves to have stuff smooshed up against his face, which is problematic, but I roll up a really soft burp-cloth type rag and place it close to his cheek so he can rest his head against it.  His sleeping on a flat surface record is only 1.5 hours so I'm going to stay tuned to what other moms have to recommend!
  • We are just going through this...it would be premature for me to say it is a success story but so far he is napping well...the night is still to come.
We are using the sleep suit and we also elevated the crib to mimic the elevation of the RNP.    Basically we are using a crib wedge plus one other 1.5 inch pillow underneath the mattress.  Our LO also uses the A&A blankets as a lovey...and we purchased the crib sheet as well.

  • I noticed my son liked the incline... so we put a book under the mattress on one end so hes inclined a little. thats how he sleeps at daycare in a crib and after awhile we took the book out and he doesnt mind being flat.
