Weekdays vs. Weekends - Sleeping

We have a relatively okay sleeping baby. On the weeknights anyways. We put her down awake around 6:30-7:30, when she starts showing tired cues, and she'll usually wake up once to eat and then right back to sleep.

On the weekends, it's complete misery. We put her down around the same time, she puts herself to sleep, and then the trouble starts. She's up at 9. And 11. And 1. And 3. And 4:45. It's like having a newborn all over again. It's not as painful on Saturday nights, because we have Sunday to recover, but on Mondays when my day starts at 5, it means I'm starting the week off exhausted.

I'm guessing it's something to do with our weekend schedule. She seems to be napping about the same amount, possibly 30 mins more or so on the weekends, and they've been relatively quiet weekends for the most part. Is this a pretty common occurrence? Any suggestions that worked for you?

  • I'm on mobile so I can't see how old your LO is but my DD used to do the same thing when she was a baby. She was an infant who thrived on routine and somehow weekends just messed with her schedule.

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice but she did eventually outgrow it around the 1 year mark.

  • To me it sounds like something that happened with my LO when she didn't have enough 'to do' on the weekends to wear her out. At that age I took her swimming in the afternoons and once she started walking over to the park. I found that at day care LO is constantly doing things, and that just doesn't happen on a lazy weekend at home- stroller rides are fun but don't use up a lot of energy.
  • Kids go through phases and most last about 6+ wks. Try to follow the weekday schedule as far as feeding and napping goes. Maybe try wear her out a little bit more before bedtime with a walker, jumper, stroller ride,etc...

  • I didn't even think of her not being tired enough.. To me, sitting in a daycare room, responsible for nothing and playing would be relaxing! We're especially bad on Sundays now that football's all geared up.

She's 7 months, and we spend tons of time playing, but maybe just not enough.

  • A lot of times getting fresh air wears my kids out more than running laps indoors around the house.  Try getting outside with her if the weather is nice.
  • My LO just did that this weekend. We were in bed a lot because I was sick, that's the only thing that was really different. Maybe it is the change in routine?

We are really into football too but I still have to get out and do things with DS or he gets stir crazy.
We still do other things besides football, but it's really just a "be at home" day with some errands and house upkeep thrown in. Mostly lots of playing for us, and husband cheering on his fantasy players and changing diapers. In my mind, it's not too far off from what she's doing on a regular basis at daycare.

At 7 months, she is definitely not content to just sit and play by herself while we watch, but she's luckily not yet to the point where she needs to get outside and run around to get the wiggles out. I know it's not far along though!
