Parenting after a Loss

Where does LO nap? (ct103)

Hi ladies, sorry I've been MIA. I'm a busy lady, but we're doing amazing! What I would like to ask all of you is where does your LO take naps? When DD was a newborn she would only nap while held, then we transitioned her to napping in the RnP after passing out after a bottle (in the middle of the living room). Now we must make a change again because she is just too sensitive to the lights and sounds of the living room, and she needs to be able to move and roll freely as babies her age do in their sleep (she's about a week shy of 6 months old).

What I'm really scared of is that she will mix up her days and nights and therefore screw up her night sleep, which only just started improving! Do you think a nearly 6 month old can handle the concept of napping and night sleeping in the same place? I'm thinking about making a few small changes, like perhaps different background music during the day, and only white noise at night. What else can I try?

Re: Where does LO nap? (ct103)

  • A has napped in both his crib (which was originally the pack 'n play) and in his bouncer seat.  It used to be about 70/30 crib to bouncer, but now is more 90/10*.  He is not the greatest napper, but I have not noticed the location affecting his nighttime sleep.  Honestly, we keep everything about the environment the same for nighttime sleep and daytime naps- he gets a sleep sack or swaddled arms out, his A+A blanket to snuggle with (which I then have to sneak out of the crib one he's asleep) plus the fan and his sleep sheep white noise maker.  We don't always do a story before naptime- but always do before bed.  Differences are that baths come with nighttime sleeping every three days and on the nights when we don't have a bath, we wash face and hands and apply lotion. I think the general darkness of the room is a bit of a clue as to day vs night.  When he was smaller, I'd only half close the shades to keep it a bit light for for naptime, but probably stopped doing that around 5 months.

*He also naps in the car when we travel or when we are completely desperate for him to take a d**n nap

  • Thanks ladies! She had a pretty decent afternoon nap in there today. I think I'll get some speakers for my iPhone so I can play some "nap time music" and then she can continue to use baby Einstein sea dreams soother at night, which she is very used to. I don't know, maybe I need these rituals for me!

  • Yes, i think they can handle it. My son did at about that âge.

To answer your question, he naps in his crib and on occasion in his car seat. This has been the case since ST at six months.

Be consistent and change things slowly, baby will adjust.

  • Our boys napped on us or a boppy next to us in the beginning. They transitioned to their crib at night at 6m actual, 3.5m adjusted. My husband immediately started putting them in their cribs for naps at that point when he was home alone but I continued to snuggle them until they reached 8m actual and were too active to sleep in a boppy. I miss those snuggle naps! But they have never had any issue distinguishing between naps and night sleep.

  • I used to have DS nap in his RNP from about 2-4 months (before that it was just wherever he was). At 5 months on, we had all naps in his bed. Its pretty amazing but most babies just get it by that age. It worked out better because it was quiet and I had his black out shades and sound machine going. He never once was confused between nap/bed at that age.

  • She has napped in her crib since she started sleeping in her crib at around 4 weeks. She takes great naps in there (2-3 hours) and has no problem sleeping there at night too.

  • Judah naps in his swing which is in the living room. I do make sure the curtains are closed and keep the light off for his nap. I will turn on the "bug sounds" on his swing at the beginning of his nap and it goes off on its own after awhile. At night, he sleeps in a RnP beside my bed for the first half of the night and in my bed during the early morning hours. Our bedroom has a TON of white noise....the ceiling fan on high, an air purifier on high, and a "baby's first years" white noise machine. For both naps and night, he is swaddled.

M started napping in her crib before she started sleeping there at night.  Her naps are a solid 30-40 min and rarely anything more.  She sleeps decently at night (slept great until we transitioned her out of swaddle... she wakes up for 2 MOTN feedings again now instead of 1).

ETA: we play a sound machine during naps, but not at night
