Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep Training Question...

Ok so I should know this b/c I have a 3 yr old son already..

But I have started sleep training with my 5 month old.  I let him cry for a while.. go in stick the soother in his mouth and go out again... if he starts crying again I let him cry longer and then do the same thing.. etc....... SO they fall asleep and all is well but they wake up 4 hours later (still not morning) .... do you let them cry this time too?? or assume they must really be hungry this time since it has been like 7 hours... and if you assume they are hungry and get them out won't this confuse them and prolong the training??

Any thoughts??

Re: Sleep Training Question...

  • I honestly don't know the true protocol here but if my DS goes 7 hours and wakes, I feed him.  Last night DS slept from 7am until 2am, woke for a bottle and went right back to sleep.  He drank the whole bottle.  This tells me he wanted to eat.  Had he only eated an oz or 2, I'd be having 2nd thoughts on whether or not he really needed to eat.

  • I'm nursing, and if DS wakes up, I feed him. He always seems to empty both breasts so I'm guessing he's hungry. After he's done eating, though, I put him right back to bed. I figure if he fusses a little, I know he's fed, burped, and dry and he just needs to get himself back to sleep.

  • I'm doing sleep training also with my 4 mo DD. I have a 5 hour cut off before I feed agian. If she wakes before the cut off, I pick her up, soother her til she's calm but not asleep, and put her back down. If it's after the cut off, I nurse her and also put her down awake. It doesn't prolong the training at all. Our LO's still need the night feedings.

I found an AMAZING sleep resource. There's great info on the different methods to use or you can ask for help. Here it is. Good luck! And btw I'm on day 4 of sleep training and DD slept 11 hours last night, 8 of them straight so it DOES work and this site is what made it happen.
