placentas fused together

Ok so Baffled. I delivered my GG twins last Mon and was told they two placentas fused together. We thought they were mono Di the whole time. There was only one chronic sac. I was actually told they were Mo Mo until 12 weeks bc they couldn't find a membrane until then. What kind of twins are these??? They look I'D but this tiny its hard to tell I guess. Anyone else out there have this and were yours I'D or fraternal?

Same here. But we're looking into testing to see if they might still be ID. They could see the peak of where they fused pretty early on in our ultra sound, at about 18 weeks.
  • Did you both have separate sacs though...that's where Im getting confused they appeared to only have one chorionic sac?

I totally missed that, sorry. Yes mine had separate sacks.
  • When was your first ultrasound that showed one gestational sac?

  • I had something somewhat similar happen. I was told my girls were mono/di throughout my pregnancy, though my first ultrasound wasn't until 20 weeks. I ordered the placental pathology report when my girls were close to a year old and it stated that it was two placentas fused together. Since they had the same blood type, eye and hair color we chose to go ahead with testing to confirm whether or not they are identical (they are).

I'm still unsure about the accuracy of the pathology report, but am glad we did the testing. It is nice to know for sure.

  • This is similar to mine. In the u/s they looked like they were in 1 sac.. there was a thin dividing membrane... almost missed at my 10 week u/s but they had 1 outer sac. They told me I had 2 placentas. I'm in the middle of getting testing done so I'll let you know what I find out.

  • Maybe the report is wrong ? Sounds skeptical ??? :-)
My GGG had fused placenta. But the two that fused are clearly fraternal. They all had seperate sacs.

  • If you had an early u/s in which they were diagnosed mo/di, I'd probably go with that.  It's almost a 100% accurate diagnosis at that point.  Perhaps the pathologist who examined your placenta made an error.  You could always have them DNA tested if you are unsure, since even di/di twins can be ID.
  • My di/di twins have a fused placenta. They aren't born yet, but they're definitely not ID (boy/girl).

  • My di/di twins had placentas that fused. I was told at my first u/s (11w5d) by the tech that they were di/di and my OBs never said anything about twin type after that. I ordered the placenta pathology report not long ago and it was interesting. (The nurse had said at delivery that it was one placenta--I asked to see it--so I knew then they must have fused.) They are clearly fraternal though.
