Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Common cold

My daughter will be 6 months on the 6th and this is the 1st time she has a cold. I feel so bad for her. She had a stuffy nose last night and still this morning. She seems happy and alert but is there anything else I can do for her other than the humidifier and I gave her a lil Tylenol before bed so she wasn't uncomfortable. I also gave her nasal decongest ion drops yest but you can't use it that often on a baby so then I used saline drops. I don't think there is anything else I can do but maybe you guys have some ideas. I just feel so bad I can hear her stuffiness/congestion. Should I bring her to the dr or wait to see how she is tomorrow? Sheis acting normal and all and I don't think it's in her chest and she's not pulling on her ears or anything..should I takeherfor her normal walk today as well? Any tips would've appreciated :)

Re: Common cold

  • Sounds like you're doing pretty much all you can.  If she's happy and not running a fever, there's no real point in going to the doc unless it will make you feel better.  Try a warm bath or put her in a steamy bathroom and try vicks on her chest and the bottoms of her feet.
  • My 5 month old just got over her first cold too. I had the humidifier, saline drops and aspirator. Only use the aspirator 3 times a day so I would do it before she ate or slept if it sounded really bad. Not really much else you can do. If you bf, let her nurse more often. The antibodies in bm will help them get over the cold faster.

  • If you're BFing, breast milk up the nose works like saline but doesn't burn.  My LO had a cold and got a fever with it so we used Tylenol, but only when her temp was above 100.  Also, when you shower, take a hot one and bring her into the bathroom in a seat, car seat, etc.  With a bib on, it will get messy...  : )

DS just got his first cold last weekend

I nursed like crazy, and gave Tylenol every 4 hours. He got a fever up to 38 but it was gone by the morning. Still has runny nose but he's feeling better. We live in a humid climate so we didn't bother with a humidifier. Having warm baths also helped
  • Get a NoseFrida. The concept is gross, but it works so well! You can usually find them at baby stores, I got ours at Whole Foods. Also second the humidifier. I also propped up one end of DS' mattress to help him breathe at night.
