The word rape

edited September 2013 in Parenting
Do you think it's appropriate and/or funny to use the word "rape" in a joking manner?

For example: "we raped your team" (when winning a sport)

Or

"I'm about to rape this fool" (playing a video game)

Re: The word rape

  • It doesn't make me personally uncomfortable, but I don't like the fact that it could make others feel shitty. I don't think it's okay to use it.

  • As with all things, it depends on your audience and context. I'm not offended by most things but know that it's a trigger for some people, so I don't use it often.
  • I think it can be triggering to be used so nonchalantly.

  • I absolutely abhor the word being used in such a manner.

  • I don't normally use the word out of context. I don't personally get upset by it, but having been sexually assaulted before, I can appreciate how it might upset someone who has. There are plenty of other words out there I can use that don't upset people who have already had enough to deal with.

My SIL said this a week ago. As in "we really raped that customer on the price". I was kind of shocked and didn't say anything. If she uses it again I'm going to bring it up because I think people shouldn't use that word so casually.
