Single Parents

Joint vs. Sole

This may sound like an idiotic question...but what are the differences between joint and sole custody. Obviously I know joint would be shared custody but with sole...does this mean dad can never come around? Not really understanding the differences there...esp with a newborn. Not sure how a joint could really work in that situation.

Re: Joint vs. Sole

  • There is joint legal custody where both parents share the responsibility in decision making, such as school and religion. Joint physical custody is when both parents share the child for close to the same amount of time. Sole custody would be where one parent has the child for most of the week but the other parent is granted visitation and probably sleepovers.
I was just reading about all of this haha.

  • I have sole custody. In divorce papers I put any holidays or other days father can see kids. As sole provider you can choose whatever you want. For me father gets father day and every Monday
  • Hmmm...good to know. I would like to have sole legal and sole physical. I don't think BD is capable of understanding complex decisions for her benefit due to his PTSD and mental instability. God willing...
